I'm only now seeing this, as I'm far behind on reviewing my submissions, but I wanted to comment on it because I like it so much. :)
You said you don't especially like the colors, but I honestly like them quite a lot. To me, the way you shaded him suggests that he's staring at a small, but very focused light source - something like a candle on a table, perhaps. It's a distinctive look and I think it works really well.
It's a great piece, overall! Very nice work. :)
