Try sneaking everywhere. It's slow at first but eventually you'll be a mater ambusher. Then you can sneak up behind archers, grab them by the throat and throw them; then when they're on the ground you can strangle them until they pass out. After that you'll have free reign to LOP OFF THEIR ARMS AND TEAR THEIR EYES OUT WITH YOUR TEETH >=C
I tried playing Dwarf Fortress but it was just so....complicated to get them to do anything. I gave them jobs and set up workplaces and the way was clear to do it but they refused to move. It being a text-based game didn't help matters. I'm sure it wouldn't be nearly as bad if I could have some sort of graphics to it. It needs a reboot!
Dwarves can be very finicky (and stupid) creatures in which case I typically suggest finding a way to sacrifice them to a dwarf eating carp.
Or you can take bets on who the last survivor will be once they start starving off and murdering each other.
Alternatively, the Phoebus tileset and Dwarftherapist can be a huge help when starting out.
