The majority of inhabitants of Nivarde are also known as the bêtes, animals who have mysteriously gained the ability to walk upright and communicate as intelligent creatures. Explanations range from druidic magic to curses transforming the human inhabitants of Nivarde, but if the bêtes know, they aren't telling. Among the bêtes are the foxes, or renartais, whose reputation as egotistical rabble-rousers and self-proclaimed revolutionaries is almost legendary. Despite this, a few accomplish feats of genuine heroism and liberation....
Knowledge (Local) DC 25: One of the great mysteries of the bêtes is whether the different kinds-- aside from simple matters such as crosses of different canines or felines --is whether animals which are otherwise unrelated in the wild can interbreed as the bêtes, with the aid of their magical nature.
One example occasionally pointed to by those who know of her is Sylia d'Maleperduys, a bard and member of l'Ordre d'Egalité, a quasi-revolutionary group advocating the right of all creatures to live according to their own desires, not what tradition claims is their appointed place in society. Resembling a cat in some ways and a fox in others, there are those who whisper that she is the daughter of a prominent Carabasien noblewoman and an infamous Renartais rogue-- or as some tell it more scandalously, the parent's genders are reversed --and the magical nature of the Nivardese people allowed her birth and gave her her signature twin tails. Some consider her the bête equivalent of an aasimar (or tiefling), touched by the spirits with a unique form and destiny.
But then, this is all rumour, and Sylia's tales only tell of others than herself...
(The red hair didn't fit in with the less anthropomorphized nature of the bêtes, so I gave her a bandanna instead. I took the "balance" concept somewhat literally and have her holding a scale, as well as wearing a pendant in the likeness thereof.)
