I was not having the best of mornings in my Equestria dreamscape. I had arrived for my morning flight lesson out at Sweet Apple Acres to find that the visitor Rainbow Dash had spoke of visiting us to see how my flight lesson were coming along was none other than the Chief Flight Evaluation Officer for the Wonderbolts and Senior Flight Instructor for the Royal Guard. The corrosive Captain Firewing http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7483135 . It was a less than enjoyable experience for both myself and Rainbow Dash. After his opening statement the Captain went off to find bathroom. He told us to stay put until he got back. Then we'd begin the oral exam part of my flight evaluation. With that he turned around and strolled off toward one of the outhouses on the farm property.
Once the "charming" Captain was in the little shack and out of earshot I turned to Rainbow Dash. Now Dash has a rather mercurial personality and can have some rather extreme mood swings, and at the moment she was the saddest pony I had ever seen in my life. She was just standing there head hung low and her tail limp. The mare's wings hung drooped at her sides. It even seem as if some her brilliant colors had been somehow drained from her body. Her eyes were just focused on the ground beneath her hooves. I coughed to try and get her attention. "Um Dash, are you okay?" She just stared at the ground as she replied. "Uh, I'm fine…….How are you doing?" "I've been better but I'll admit I am more worried about you right now. Dash you know I've listened to all your lessons and tried to do my best to learn what you've taught me. I mean I can fly now. So in my book you've done good by me." She shivered slightly. "But I don't think Firewing believes that and he seems to think I'm a failure! As an instructor and as flier!" She look up with her big purple eyes filled with dread. "I'll never get one the Wonderbolts now!" She moaned. Before my eyes I could see her believing that her dream was dying.
Now I am not the greatest motivational speaker in the world but I felt compelled to try and do something help her, and in return help pep myself up. Besides I remember being her age once and having someone who you viewed as a respected and important elder stomp all over you could leave you devastated for quite a while. Straightening my posture up. I stared at her and summed up as much authority as I could find in my voice. "Rainbow Dash, have you knowingly withheld any knowledge in your flight instruction to me?" She shook her head and responded without looking up. "No." I forged on ahead "Have you not taught me how to fly. A skill for which I had no previous ability in? Is that not correct?" She looked somewhat befuddled but nodded her head. "Yes that is true, but…." I cut her off and continued speaking. "Then if you have instructed me to the best of your abilities, and have succeeded in helping me achieve flight why are you worried? I can fly. I have been studying the topic nonstop now for over two months. I have accomplished every task you have asked me to do. Princess Celestia asked you to teach me to fly. Not to train me to be on the Wonderbolts! So with that in mind how can you consider yourself a failure? You won the Junior Fliers Competition did you not?" Dash nodded her head. "Have you not helped protect not only the Princesses but the KIngdom of Equestria itself from threats to its very existence?" She replied slowly. "Sure, however I…." I again cut her off and marched ahead with my train of thought. "So you've done everything the Princess has asked of you. I have succeeded at task you she assigned you. You have proven yourself in both competition and in the field. You are one of the bearers of the Elements of Harmony! On top of it all you can do a Sonic Rainboom! If Captain Firewing thinks that you and I are failures we will just have to prove him wrong. Right!"
Slowly a smile grew across Dash's face and some of the fire returned to her eyes. "Yeah," She growled. "We'll just have to prove him wrong! You've come along way Brick and I am totally behind you!" For once I just smiled and ignored her favorite little nickname for me. Besides it felt good to have her back in my corner rooting for me. Okay Firewing bring it on.

Righteous words.
Firewing might be giving you a test of character, too. Can you be cowed? Will you fold under pressure? If that's his intent, he may have overlooked the power acting on the behalf of another can have on individual determination. If it was just Sky Brush's reputation at stake, you might be willing to fail. But he's made it so you're defending Rainbow Dash, too.
You. Will. Not. Fail.

Poor Dashie really does look like the world's saddest pony there at top. And I enjoy how you made her look after your little pep talk to her.
And I suppose I can understand Firewing's attitude. Given how dangerous it can be to fly as a pegasus, it might be better to find out now if you're prone to panic or lose your head at unexpected surprises.
