the second of two commissions for farorenightclaw, this time of a kittybot! (you can see the other one at our DA, along with the finished headshots that saturnine has been doing so far). I really enjoyed drawing xyr, yay neotenic characters and robots <3 and little paw hands, ohmygosh so cute. n_n the tights were totally inspired by a pair of leggings that saturnine made out of some really cool circuit print fabric.
unfortunately working on this made me realize something about doing commissions that I’m disappointed about, which is that I’m probably going to either not be able to offer full body painted images as part of our commission options or only offer one of them on a very occasional basis. due both to my health limitations and to the way I am most comfortable working (everything is drawn at the posted size and painted mostly on one layer) I am painfully slow and tedious at painting in this style, even though I have so much fun doing it. I feel like it both isn’t fair to commissioners to possibly deal with higher prices I’m not sure my work warrants to compensate for effort/time put into each painted piece (I believe this image took around 25 hours to do, for example), and not fair to myself to feel spread too thin or to make something I can’t be proud of just for the sake of finishing. I’ll have to figure something out, but for now I’m focusing on completing my few current trades and then I’ll at least open for some flat color + texture stuff.
oh! and just fyi for any commenters, farore is agender and I believe the correct pronouns are xe, xyr, xem, etc. so not a she despite the cute tunic and bows and such ;p
thank you again for commissioning me farore, it was a pleasure to work with your characters. :>

while it's completely your decision to not offer this type of work for commissions, i don't think you should feel bad about having to raise your price(s). your art is worth what people are willing to pay, and oftentimes artists seriously devalue their own work because they're their own worst critic. i think you'd be surprised; people are usually willing to pay pretty high amounts for quality work. though i think when they're paying those higher prices, people generally like to have bigger, high-res versions of them, so trying to work bigger would be something to consider.
but! all that being said, it's still totally your choice to continue doing these types of commissions or not. just wanted to say you could try raising your price to something more reasonable before scrapping it altogether. :>
also, i freaking love all those bows and how you did the wrinkles in the dress ; ; <3

thank you for sharing your thoughts :> I have tried so, so many times over the years to work with large files, but drawing small has always been so natural and aesthetically appealing to me and the technique for both my digital and traditional art reflects that to a degree that is quite difficult to break from. in my time away I was able to change a lot about the way I work but hi-res art has always been a struggle and something that slows my workflow critically, it's like a mental block for me that I can't seem to get over despite my repeated efforts. I completely agree about it being something commissioners should get in a certain price range of commission though, and I would really love to offer hi-res files to people in the future. thank you for mentioning it, it is definitely something I need/want to work on.

As with all your work...I can't stop staring, there's so much to see. So many details and bits and colors, and the combination of sweet, young-feeling fashion with the robot theme is REALLY neat! I've always loved this design, so precious--and you really take precious things to a NEW level of preciousness ;-;
Stunning job!

I would for sure like to do commissions in the style of the two pictures of antique & saturnine I've uploaded so far (mechanical pencil "inking" with a few details added with colored/metallic pens, cut out and pasted onto patterned paper), since that is my favorite + most used media and mech pencil is the easiest on my fingers and joints. possibly a full body or two and definitely a set of partial body/badge type ones!

aagh sorry! I keep forgetting it's pencil, it just looks so crisp! <3
someday I'd totally love to trade or commission you for something in that media, especially since it's your favorite way to work <3 your digital work, while gorgeous, must be really time consuming...just looking shows that. Traditional is a lot more straightforward even if it's colored. (hence why I have a feeling I'll always prefer it...;) )

I'm so happy you like it!!
and don't worry, it wasn't hard on me as much as I just wish I didn't drawn so darn slowly xp this was the first time I've painted fur in quite a few years as well, and in a new technique and different program... so I think I just needed to get accustomed to everything again. thank you for giving me a chance to feel out my current commission process by being such a cool commissioner w characters I enjoy <3 and for letting me practice painting fur! I swear once I found a way to do it that I liked I wanted that tail to go on foreeevvvvvvveeeeerrrrr.
