20 years ago today, I was at this con and met the guy who went on to be my Mate [We've been living together 17+ years now] this was in a world pretty much before the internet and we used to write to each other + trade Videos = comics etc, it was kind of obvious we where both into the "Furry" side of things too, so the rest is history as they say.....

Oh its been around ages, I mean it depends where you look or what "Turns you on" to Furry, in my case Disney movies like Robin Hood, Richard Scarry books + Rupert Bear when I was growing up in the 70s + BRB cartoons in the 80s [Dogtanian, Willy Fog + Sandokan www.brb.es ]
When I was into the early Comics + Anime scene over here late 80s/early 90s, Comic shops used to more or less give away/sell really cheap the early "Funny Animal" [Furry] comics like Critters, Albedo, Usagi Yojimbo, Captain Carrot, Rocket Racoon etc as "No one wanted them, Superhero comics sold better", it wasn't til the Internet started happening that a Furry "Scene" really started as like minded people got in touch with each other
Its Similar with Anime Fandom, I used to bust a gut Copying videos and trading around the world, owning duel standard videos [PAL over here, NTSC in America and Japan] Now its just a matter of go onto Youtube or Daily montion type the name of the show and there they all are, every ep, subtitled, perfect quality etc, blows my mind still [Same with iPods when I used to think Tape Walkmans or portable CD players where the biz]

I grew up with stuff like that in the early 90's though I didn't get into rocket raccoon untill 2011 thanks to Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 now I have tons of his comics also other comics to.
TMNT was more interesting than the comics of usagi though I still like him.
I forgot about the disney cartoons lol actualy what I was trying to say is furry conventions didn't start till round late 80's (or so I think)
I used to get so interested in finding the same stuff as you in all four areas, Oceania (Australia), NTSC (USA). PAL (European) and Japanesse especialy japanesse anime was big on the furry fandom. I would stop playing sports or games just to watch monster rancher, pokemon (till 2003) and digimon.
To be honest it wasn't the "Turn On" that got me into furries at first untill I got alot older first character I did like was the biker mice. They are humanoid mice on steroids also mention street sharks n extreme dinosaurs.
But before all that I just liked seeing furries or favourite heroes or heroines kicking ass or just being flat out humours and fun.
At the moment I still search for media (games or shows) that I enjoyed in my short lived 1980's and my 90's era where I watched alot of shows that were very old to modern stuff also same for horror to I just love horror practical effects n campy horror.
I just luckily found Donkey Kong Land 3 for the gameboy by suprise when I went on a short holiday to south england Bognor Regis and Brighton. Btw its a peaceful place but very cold but I can adapt to it lol.
