Here it is, the NCIS Timeline, explaining what events happened during the previous non-uploaded NCIS chapters and more and showing that not everything is as funny as the NCIS chapters would lead to believe.
It starts with the whole origin of the video game characters, going back to the 60ies, so it's quite a long reading.
I tried my best to make a "credible" (yeah, everything with video game characters sure is credible...) alternate dimension, by using real-life events and trying to mix my stuff with them.
While it explains the events, it doesn't explain more "technical" things like how does "reset" really work, what can video game characters really, do, etc... These will be for other uploads.
In the meanwhile, I hope you'll enjoy the reading and don't hesitate to ask me if something seems unclear. =)
Also, rated mature for implied deaths, slaughters, body horror, conspiracies, etc...
NCIS may have characters acting funny, the context of these adventures is usually not funny.
NCIS
Timeline
1960:
• The tip of an ancient artifact is discovered in the middle of the recently-discovered Chicxulub crater.
1963:
• The artifact is finally free of its rocky prison, reaching 1-mile tall.
• The American government investigates but leaks make it quickly known to the public.
1964:
• After 1 year of research, scientists come to the conclusion the artifact, nicknamed "The Monolith", is made of extraterrestrial materials and more than 65 million years old.
• After months of diplomatic conflicts, the American government gains the property of the Monolith and the inner half of the crater.
• The story inspires Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick who implement the idea of a monolith in their project 2001: A Space Odyssey.
• The USSR grows interested by this discovery. Diplomatic disputes start with the Soviet Union asking the USA to give their scientists opportunities to study the artifact.
1965:
• Soviet moles are discovered inside the American base protecting the Monolith.
• The relationships between USSR and USA are weakening, America still refusing the Soviets to approach the artifact while reinforcing security on the site.
• Monolith-based cults and sects appear all over the world, each with different theories.
• Scientists keep studying various theories about the origins of the Monolith.
1966:
• During a fight against new Soviet moles and American agents, electric cables fall on the Monolith, causing its surface to glow and make strange hieroglyphs appear for a few seconds. The incident is kept secret while scientists try to re-enact the incident.
• Europe grows interested by the Monolith, as well. The USA still refuse non-Americans to approach it.
• A re-enactement of the incident results in the creation of a physical cartoon character. One scientist says he was thinking of the character while electricity was applied on the monolith. Others scientists try with other fictional characters and succeed in creating them, each displaying their known abilities, including violating laws of physics and others. However, some creations seem randomly chosen due to random thoughts by the Monolith.
• Scientists discover even objects can be created and successfully create the first functional laser pistol, though attempts to understand its functioning fail because of various unknown materials.
• The American government sees the potential of this discovery against the Soviet enemy and orders more fictional creations, mostly for military applications.
• The USSR, Europe and even Japan learn about the American discoveries from their spies and are anxious about American plans.
• America finally reveals the researches on the Monolith. Meanwhile, the US grow a deadly arsenal of fictional weapons and armies and demonstrate their power to the world and threatens to use them during the Vietnam War. Tensions between the various international blocks are stronger than ever and Moscow accuses Washington of preparing world domination.
• Desperate by the turn of events, the Soviet Union and European Community secretly decide to destroy the Monolith, hoping to put an end to the dangerous growth in power of America. The operation, called Operation Shatterpoint, aims to bomb the Monolith with experimental soviet stealth bombers. The operation is a suicidal mission as the bombers just have enough fuel to reach the Chicxulub crater from a French air base.
• During December, various United Nations members fear World War III is only a matter of months and urge Washington to calm down the situation and accept to share their knowledge with the rest of the world. The government refuses, saying the Soviets will use it to take over the world. People fears this Christmas may be the last of Humanity.
1967:
• Operation Shatterpoint:
o January 8: As the US Army launches Operation Cedar Falls in Vietnam, 3 Soviet stealth bombers leaves the 701 Salon-de-Provence French air base.
o January 10, 2:00am (local time): The bombers reach the Chicxulub American based hiding the Monolith undetected and begin their bombing.
o January 10, 2:02am: The base is destroyed, but the Monolith is discovered to be impervious to all damage
o January 10, 2:06am: All 3 bombers are gunned down. 1 explodes in the sky, leaving no survivors, the remaining 2 crash 1 and 1.5 miles from the Monolith.
o January 10, 2:21am: Seeing American troops reaching their position, the 3 surviving crew members self-destruct their crafts with them still inside, trying to prevent the Americans from identifying them. Operation Shatterpoint ends in failure.
• Aftermath of Shatterpoint:
o Following the failure of Shatterpoint and the success in identifying one of the deceased soviet crew members, Washington tells Moscow and their allies they have gone too far. Confident with their new allies from the Monolith, the USA stop all diplomatic relationships with Europe and USSR.
o A new base is built around the Monolith, much heavily protected.
o January 15, 2:21am: General Secretary Brezhnev escapes an assassination attempt from a creation of the Monolith after it annihilated all of his bodyguards. Its body disintegrates once killed and reappears near the Monolith few minutes later, making it the first occurrence of the resurrection process, later called "reset". Washington denies any involvement while impressed by the abilities of a single of their allies.
o World War III begins, opposing the USA and their Monolithic allies to the USSR. The EC refuses to take part in the conflict despite being considered a dangerous ally to the Soviets by Washington.
o America continues to produce deadlier weapons while also creating and recreating random characters and items from the Monolith. Scientists try to better understand the process of creation.
• The First Army in the World:
o In August, with the help of the Monolith abilities, America has the most powerful and most technologically advanced army in the world, using spaceships, functional AIs, and deadly futuristic weapons, and keeps displaying it to the world as propaganda and demotivating news for their enemies.
o In September, numerous war machines come close to Spain coasts. President Johnson gives his ultimatum to Brezhnev and his allies: Complete and unconditional surrender before October 1 or complete destruction of their military forces. Even in the American government, people fear about massive civilian casualties.
• The Monolith's Rebellion:
o October 1, 01:02am (Washington time): Few hours before the end of Johnson's ultimatum, scientists notice an unusual increase of energy coming from the Monolith without any human interaction. Suddenly, all military creations, sent to strike their enemies, turn on American carriers, submarines and crafts. Scientists are unaware of it at this time, as non-military creations act normally.
o October 1, 01:10am: All American forces are wiped out, sending both America and Soviet Russia into confusion. Meanwhile, creations made as bodyguards for the President open fire in the White House, killing all human bodyguards before addressing to Johnson in the name of the Monolith.
o October 1, 01:30am: The President is forced by the rogue bodyguards to make a public announcement, addressing not only to America and USSR but to the whole world as well. His tone is nervous as he delivers what will be known in modern times as "the Monolith's Independence Day Speech".
• The summary of the Monolith's Independence Day Speech:
o The Monolith itself is the property to no organization.
o The Monolith technology is the property of the Monolith only.
o No organization must claim the Monolith Creations' technology.
o Any Terran organization or individual can ask assistance or advice to the Monolith Creations.
o The Monolith stays neutral to all conflicts on Earth and is free to lend assistance or launch attack on any organization if necessary.
o The United Nations must regulate the use of the Monolith Shards.
o Any Terran organization or individual can claim a Monolith Shard for itself under approval of the United Nations only.
o This is the last warning of the Monolith.
• Aftermath of the Monolith's Independence Day Speech:
o President Johnson is found dead by rescue forces. Autopsy reveals he shot himself in the head, just after making his speech. Today, scholars are still uncertain about the circumstances of his death. Did he kill himself after he realized he nearly caused World War III, did the Monolith Creations managed to force him, or did he kill himself to avoid a fate worse than death? Today, the mystery still remains.
o All military creations vanish from the face of the Earth few minutes following the President's speech.
o Having witnessed the Monolith abilities and following Johnson's mysterious death, all countries agree to the end of the conflict.
o Monolith-based sects and cults grow even more numerous following the presumed intervention of the Monolith. Some consider it to be God.
o Scientists start considering the sentience of the Monolith and its abilities to control its creations. Others think the creations just went rogue and wanted to prevent the war, using the Monolith as a symbol.
o The Scientists discover what the Monolith Shards, mentioned during the Monolith's Independence Day, are: removable parts of the Monolith, displaying the same abilities of creation. Scientists confirm said parts couldn't be removed before the events of October 1.
o The United Nations order the dismantling of the American bases around the Monolith.
o The inner half of the Chicxulub Crater and the Monolith itself are considered independent on December 15.
1968:
• Monolith Shards start getting distributed, mainly to various cinema studios. Many Monolith Creations become actors. Some studios recreate their characters as Monolith Creations, especially Disney.
1968 - Present:
• More and more Shards are distributed. Video game companies begin to appear all over the world. Monolith Creations' abilities in video games cause the market to grow exponentially with their help, though consoles and computers lack the abilities to properly make use of them until the 2000s.

• March 25: The Thingoid escapes its icy prison and kills a few scientists before been captured and secured again. It is discovered to be a creature able to mimic and feed on Monolith Creations, assimilating knowledge and gaining new abilities to increase its chances of assimilation.
• May 14 - July 6: Former NIS agents Samus Aran, Ganondorf and Fox McCloud among other video game characters, including Cynder, disappear mysteriously to be used for further experiments with the Thingoids.
• July 7: Investigating the former agents' disappearances, the NCIS agents get their hands on former rogue NIS agent Conker who reveals the NIS ex-members were taken to Outpost 3113.
• Thingoid (First) Crisis:
o July 8, 5:00am (Outpost 3113 time): The Thingoids escape again and overrun the base, starting infecting and killing its inhabitants beyond any possibility of containment. A distress call is sent before the station goes silent. Various agencies send a rescue team, including the NCIS sending another team while the main one is deployed for another mission.
o July 9, 6:00am: The main NCIS team leaves the NCIS HQs to be deployed on the base location following a full day and night of radio silence.
o July 9, 9:00pm: Due to a snow storm raging in the area, Falco Lombardi, the team pilot, crashes the transport ship.
o July 9, 9:20pm: While the team investigates the ravaged complex, the NCIS transport ship is destroyed by a surviving agent, trying to prevent anyone from leaving the base alive, blowing himself up in the process.
o July 9, 9:25pm: The team meets Samus Aran, still alive and uninfected, who provides them with info about the Thingoids, including how to detect them by using "virtuality testers" and how to destroy them more efficiently. Aran informs them, following a deadly assault, everyone was forced to split and the testers were destroyed.
o July 9, 9:25 - 11:30pm: While exploring the facility, the NCIS finds more survivors, including Ganondorf, but no sign of the Thingoids or McCloud.
o July 9, 11:40pm: While inspecting the armory, the team discovers the scientists managed to create a weapon able to instantly detect and destroy normal-sized Thingoids, the now-called ATW (Anti-Thingoid Weapon) but it's gone from its protective container when they open it.
o July 9, 11:55pm: In the depths of the base, the group finds the still alive Cynder and McCloud, carrying the ATW and having locked themselves in a safety room made by the scientists following the first outbreak.
o July 9, 11:57pm: When the NCIS agents mention they didn't meet any Thingoid, McCloud opens the sealed door and, using the information displayed on the ATW monitor, fires at the whole team, its projectile sparing everyone except the 3 civilian survivors, revealing them to be Thingoids.
o July 9, 11:58pm: When asked why he didn't use the weapon to destroy all Thingoids himself, McCloud reveals the ATW has a long cooldown and when he found it he and Cynder were getting overrun. He mentions the base has a self-destruct system powerful enough to destroy all the complex and the Thingoids still inside.
o July 10, 12:05am: The group reaches the self-destruct system, guarded by a massive merging of all remaining Thingoids. As trying to destroy it with the ATW would prove too much time-consuming and too dangerous, Midna takes advantage of her smaller size to throw herself through a hole made by a shot of the ATW on the gargantuan creature and activates the self-destruct device by crashing herself on its button.
o July 10, 12:08am: The group of survivors makes its way to the surface while trying to prevent the disassembled Thingoids from escaping, firing everything they have to slow them down.
o July 10, 12:13am: The self-destruct system detonates engulfing the whole base in a gigantic fireball and nearly killing the agents who then destroy the last Thingoids, ending the threat.
o July 10, 12:35am: The snow storm ends, the group still safe thanks to the warmth of the burning ruins. Ridley gets to know Cynder and each falls in love for the other.
o July 10, 1:00am: A ship sent by Lizardqueen few hours after the team's departure lands near the ruins and successfully extracts all survivors.
o July 10, 1:05am: The Thingoid Crisis is considered terminated.
2008:
• Cynder and No-Name join the NCIS and integrate Midna's team.
2008 - 2010:
• Kingdom Hearts 3 development: The NCIS team and many other video game actors from Disney, Nintendo and Square-Enix star in the big crossover under the direction of lunatic director Georges Loukasse.
2010:
• Georges Loukasse is booted off the KH3 project for various questionable decisions and design choices and the whole project goes to development hell.
• An UFO crashes on Timira City, a Kaminoan City. Inside the organic meteor-like ship, Kaminoan scientists discover a nearly-destroyed creature and begin to study it. Unknown to them, the creature is a Thingoid.
• Within months, the scientists discover the Thingoid's horrific abilities but decide to continue their studies and experiments, managing to render the creature fatally vulnerable to water as a precaution. Members of the Kaminoan Scientific Community, fearing the creature's potential, ask for the project to be stopped but are rebuked. Their pleas to relocate the city civilians fall into deaf ears as well.
• As the frequency of accidents involving localized and less-and-less-easily controlled outbreaks, increases, former Project Coordinator Taun We starts leaking information to her friend, former NIS informant and Ridley's friend, Dexter Jettster, fearing the creature may represent more than a threat to Kamino.
2011:
• Thingoid Second Crisis:
o January 2, 6:28am (Kamino time): Another outbreak starts in Timira City and the Kaminoans lose a whole platform to the Thingoids in 15 hours. Despite the heavy losses, the outbreak is considered contained.
o January 3, 8:06am: A Kaminoan scientist discovers a colleague getting assimilated by a Thingoid. He manages to sound the alarm and warn the rest of the city.
o January 3, 8:32am: The Government orders the evacuation of Timira City.
o January 3, 10:18am: 65% of the population is evacuated when infected Kaminoans, prevented from leaving by the heavy rain separating the city from the evacuation platforms, block the way and begin to slaughter and infect the trapped scientists and civilians.
o January 3, 11:04am: Evacuation teams witness the last escaping way becoming overwhelmed by Thingoids.
o January 3, 12:32am: The last report indicates 77% of the population has been evacuated. So far 53,597 Kaminoans are presumed killed and infected. Timira City is put in quarantine and becomes a no-fly zone.
o January 5, 3:57pm: The Government decides not to sink the city, wanting to keep a low profile from the Galactic Republic.
o January 5, 6:00pm: The Government secretly has the installation of antiaircraft weaponry begin on the evacuation platforms of Timira City while the Prime Minister Koa Ne makes a public announcement, claiming the evacuation was due to the leak of a power core, permanently irradiating the city, killing its inhabitants and rendering it uninhabitable.
o January 16, 9:10pm: After days of taunting and fake distress calls from trapped infected Kaminoans, stand-alone antiaircraft turrets are deployed all over the Timira City. During the installations, 3 Kaminoan technicians have died, tricked by disguised Thingoids. No further incidents happen and the survivors of the city are ordered to stay silent about what happened. Uncooperative survivor scientists are brainwashed while the others stay silent for fear of getting the same treatment.
o March 4, 8:35am (Tokyo time): Following a skirmish with competitor agents using a scrambler, the NCIS team is informed by Beltino Toad, one of the Lead Scientists of the NCIS that the scrambler was made on Kamino.
o March 4, 6:30pm: Captain Falcon joins the team.
o March 4, 6:40pm: Suspecting the Galactic Republic of the Star Wars Galaxy may have secretly broken their neutrality, the NCIS team, accompanied by Commander Sauria Lizardqueen and her friend Minerva Lightmare, departs for Coruscant to meet the Jedi Council.
o March 5, 2:15pm: The NCIS gets the authorization from the council to hold an investigation on Kamino, under the condition to have Jedi master Anakin Skywalker and Padawan Ahsoka Tano to observe them.
o March 5, 2:30pm: The team splits up in groups to visit Coruscant and get some lunch. Lizardqueen and Lightmare get to know Skywalker and Tano.
o March 5, 3:45pm: While having lunch at Dex's Diner, Ridley talks about the NCIS mission details and when Kamino is mentioned, Jettster reveals the holo-communications he had with Taun We, as well as the info regarding the Thingoid researches.
o March 5, 4:00pm: Noticing the similarities with the Thingoids they met in Antartica in the leaked info, the NCIS heads to Kamino after informing Skywalker and Tano about their first encounter with the Thingoids.
o March 6, 7:00pm (Kamino time): The NCIS ship, Sentinel of Saurold, and Skywalker's, the Twilight, land on Tipoca City.
o March 6, 7:15pm: Just as the NCIS is talking about the scrambler to Prime Minister Koa Ne, Lizardqueen receives a call from Beltino Toad who mentions he made a mistake and that the scrambler is not Kaminoan. Still deciding to use the scrambler as an excuse for exploring Timira City, the NCIS Commander asks to be led to the city, but the Prime Minister refuses, assuring the city has nothing to do with this and its access is prohibited.
o March 6, 7:26pm: Faking heading to the weapon factory of Tipoca City, the NCIS and their allies exits the city and sneak their way to Timira City.
o March 6, 7:44pm: Despite being under heavy fire from the antiaircraft turrets, the Sentinel of Saurold and the Twilight successfully manage to secure and land on Evacuation Platform 8.
o March 6, 8:10pm: While exploring the derelict city, the NCIS is ambushed by Thingoids. Lightmare and Tano are isolated from the group and are forced to take a separate way.
o March 6, 8:45pm: Using Taun We's logs and the improved semi-auto ATW carried by Midna, the NCIS fends the Thingoids off enough to allow the self-destruction of Platform 4 and manages to flee from it before its collapse into the ocean. All Thingoids aboard die, destroyed by the water.
o March 6, 8:50pm: Platform 8 is sunk by the actions of Tano and Lightmare who displays impressive powers and is able to destroy the Thingoids by hirself.
o March 6, 9:04pm: Discovering other logs left by scientists, the NCIS learn genetic manipulation caused the Thingoids to be linked to a Queen. Therefore, killing it would cause all Thingoids to die.
o March 6, 9:06pm: Platform 9 is sunk by Lightmare and Tano as both groups now try to reach the main platform hiding the Thingoid Queen.
o March 7, 12:26am: At this point, the NCIS has managed to sink half of the main platforms of the whole city and to reach the main platform, wiping out more than half of the Thingoid population.
o March 7, 1:08am: While the NCIS distracts the never-ending waves of Thingoids sent by the Queen, Lightmare and Tano manage to kill the Queen after a lengthy battle, turning all Thingoids into inert goo.
o March 7, 1:10am: Tano activates the main self-destruct system as the NCIS notices the Thingoids have overcome the death of their Queen and are starting to put themselves together again, causing the 2 groups of heroes to rush towards their ships.
o March 7, 2:30am: Despite the full revival of all Thingoids, the NCIS, as well as Lightmare and Tano, reaches Evacuation Platform 8 and leaves Timira City.
o March 7, 2:40am: Despite the Thingoids' best efforts to crack Tano's new codes, all of the city pillars detonate, causing all platforms to crash into the ocean.
o March 7, 2:43am: The last platform of Timira City sinks into the ocean, ending the Thingoid threat on Kamino.
o March 7, 3:00am: Landing on Tipoca City, the team discovers the Kaminoan Government took the opportunity of the involvement of the NCIS to put the blame for the disaster on the team, confident they have no proof. When about to be arrested by Republic forces, Lizardqueen reveals all the evidence leading to the conspiracy, including logs, reports, info leaked as well as records made by a camera she always carries.
o March 7, 3:05am: With Skywalker's help, the NCIS is allowed to leave Kamino while the Republic begins its investigations. Before leaving, Lizardqueen warns the Prime Minister that trying to get rid of witnesses would mean a fate worse than reset for him.
o March 7, 3:15am: As the Sentinel of Saurold is heading to Coruscant, escorted by the Twilight, the Thingoid Second Crisis is considered terminated.
• Aftermath of the Thingoid Second Crisis:
o The Jedi Council agrees an alliance with the NCIS.
o Using this alliance, the NCIS provides the technology of the ATW to other companies by proxy, considering the Thingoids may become a threat again.
o Companies owning a Monolith Shard become aware of the Thingoid species.
o July 8, 5:00pm: The Prime Minister, along various members of the Kaminoan Government are found guilty for their conspiracy and sentenced to lifespan imprisonment. Other members of the government and resetted main scientists responsible for the experiments on the Thingoid get various lesser sentences.
• Leon S Kennedy replaces Captain Falcon in the NCIS team.
• March 25: The NCIS sabotages the main production line of the Playstation Vita memory cards, crippling it and causing their competitor to dramatically raise their prices.
• April 10: The Wii U blueprints are stolen and leaked on the Internet before the NCIS can catch the responsible. Nintendo is forced to unveil info about the console in a hurry to avoid troubles with stockholders.
• June 10: Shares of Nintendo fall almost 10% in the two days following unveiling of Wii U to levels not seen since 2006. The company holds the NCIS responsible for this, but eventually agrees to just blame agent Midna and Link, the latter responsible for leaving the blueprints in front of the former's office, and Midna for refusing to open the door for a stupid reason (a special episode of Masterchef with croissant recipes).
2012:
• The Equestria Crisis:
o (Events from Chapter 25 to X)
NCIS may have characters acting funny, the context of these adventures is usually not funny.

o January 10, 2:00am (local time): The bombers reach the Chicxulub American based hiding the Monolith undetected and begin their bombing.
o January 10, 2:02am: The base is destroyed, but the Monolith is discovered to be impervious to all damage
o January 10, 2:06am: All 3 bombers are gunned down.
• Scientists, while still not understanding how the Monolith creates, manage to improve creation success rate by using special computers on the Shards. These machines keep evolving over time.
1974:
• Nintendo acquires a Monolith Shard and begins its first tries in video game industry.
1980:
• Commander Sauria Lizardqueen and her friend Minerva Lightmare make their first appearance and quickly befriend Nintendo key-figures Hiroshi Yamauchi, Shigeru Miyamoto and Gunpei Yokoi.
1982:
• No-Name of the Brood is created, along her Brood species and used as models for comic books.
1984:

• Krystal first star in Star Fox Adventures (GC).
2003:
• Renamon starts a bounty hunter life after the end of her contract as an actress.
• Against the will of Nintendo, Lizardqueen creates the Nintendo Critical Intelligence Service (NCIS), using unknown funds. She also recruits the famous bounty hunter Renamon. Nintendo doesn't believe in its success following the failure of the NIS.
2004:
• The main NCIS team is founded, only comprising of Midna, Ridley, Renamon, Krystal and Falco.
2005:
• Lizardqueen surprises everyone by ordering the main NCIS team to destroy the Japanese production lines of Xbox 360, unwillingly helped by a group of Pokémon friends who would later become known as Poké One Squad. The operation is a success, critically and permanently crippling the implementation of the console on the Japanese market, and Nintendo renews its interest in Lizardqueen's abilities.

• Cynder first stars in Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning (GC/PS2/Xbox/GBA/DS)
• The main NCIS team expands with Link, Zelda, Epona, Michel and Angie.
2007:
• February 1: First contact with the unknown murderous and assimilating alien species -later nicknamed "Thingoids" by the NCIS- discovered in an ice block in Antarctica by American scientists and taken to secret polar scientific complex Oupost 3113, which was built on the abandoned remains of Outpost 31, a fictional research station used for the making of The Thing in 1982.

I warned you. :P
While in the series itself, the characters act comically, the story itself is not. It's still about trying to survive during the console war, sabotaging others because they sabotage you, uncovering conspiracies, etc...
Video game industry is supa dupa srs bizness!

I had a creative concept rather similar to this, only I worked it out a bit differently by the use of TARDIS-like machines called IDEAS that can travel time, space, AND dimension, therefore allowing me to write about anything I desired from movies, tv shows, video games, books, alternate timelines... Kudos to you for thinking about using a variation on the monolith, I think that's brilliant. Though, instead of having an NCIS I have a group of beings called First-Ones. I saw this timeline and I though to myself, this seems almost very familiar to me. Really, I'm very surprised to find something like this; my and my friend's webcomic is on the verge on touching up on just such scenarios, but I haven't put up but a few vague details about it, even though I've got countless notes and papers on what I want to do...and I've only just seen this today...how utterly amazing!
Sorry if this "comment" doesn't make any sense.
Sorry if this "comment" doesn't make any sense.
Don't worry, it makes sense to me. ;)
And it's good to see others are trying to find explanation to why there are movies, TV shows, video game, etc... characters, other than: "They're here, deal with it! :P"
And to be honest, making this timeline took several years to get as many ideas as possible and a few month to make something (somehow) logical that could go well with our real timeline, as well as giving an explanation to why, with all the potential creations that can be made (unlimited power supply, dimensional portals, mass effect relays, etc), Earth didn't go through an impressive technologic revolution and is still similar to ours with current-day consoles, etc...
Wiping out most of the US army and forcing the President to kill himself was a good way to say "don't even try claiming our tech again, thank you" and make sure it's understood, for me. xD

My version of Earth is pretty much the same as our 'classic' Earth, only I did some historical 'renovations', if you will. For example, the major population at large is anthropomorphic with a smaller population of what I call Eloi (humans, but their called that as a way of paying hommage to "The Time Machine"). Our 'classic' Earth still exists, but one has to use an IDEA machine to get to it (which I do touch up on).
I can't help but wonder if your timeline made as many changes as mine did. Originally, my story was a lot different. It was a lot more simplified without a setting that spans the universe; just two worlds: classic Earth and the Cartoon World. And there was just one single human made machine, originally called something dull like 'the dimension machine'. Just cartoons going to war n' stuff...but I've expanded on it heavily.
Sorry about the comments being walls of text, I'm just super excited to find someone who's got ideas similar to mine.

Hehe, and I'm excited as well to see people making complex alternate universes by adding the "WHY" element to the reason of their existence. Thanks for the comments.
And yep, the timeline was very different before. At first, the story itself was just another story with video game characters on Earth, and it was very 4th-wall-breaking, the monolith didn't exist, the characters could permanently die, etc... Then I thought about trying to fix some problems the story was implying I didn't notice first, like : "OK, so the characters are using scifi tech... but wait, wouldn't the humans claim the technology to improve themselves? How could I justify it?", "what if I tried to give an explanation to why they're here?", etc...
And it kept going while I was playing other videogames and decided to use some "things" from our world and put them in my universe.
For example:
-In the Dead Space series, there is an artifact called the Marker which can create/or contained Necromorphs. In French, the translation calls it "the Monolith", so I use it as a template for my Monolith. However, in NCIS, it's the reverse, the Marker from DS is based on the Monolith.
-One character, Cynder, in one of her games, has a bug/oversight which prevents her from running when climbing stairs. In the NCISverse, she has it as well and tries to get rid of it.
-Why the Xbox360 isn't popular in Japan? IRL, Japanese prefer the other consoles. In the NCISverse? The NCIS permanently crippled it to show they mean business and as a retribution for having a Microsoft agency bombing the NIS HQs and killing man agents who were just finishing their last day work.
-The Wii U blueprint event.
-And all these kinds of details that gain a new explanation in this universe.

Ya know, the stuff that powers my so-called IDEA machines seems to behave a little like 'the monolith'. They're powered by three variation on a mineral created at the dawn of time called 'Plattnerite' (also a hommage to a few H.G. Wells stories), and apart from allowing travel through time, space, and dimension, plattnerite can do a few funny things.
Dimesion plattnerite, if it has physical contact with a body, and grant wishes (by bending the dimension to make the imagination become reality). The funny thing was that I've made dimension plattnerite red in color...or ruby depending on how you see it, a la 'The Wizard of Oz'. Also, I've made it an integral part of the 'power' portion of the Triforce from LOZ (really big plot device there).
Time plattnerite (green), if mixed with water and dumped on an individual can do any number of things: cause one to age rapidly, grow young, send them into the future or the past...
Space plattnerite (blue) is used to travel space, plain and simple. Makes a wormhole and off goes the traveller. If physical contact is made with an individual, they may be sent to a random point in the universe (not a healthy thing if they were to reappear in, say, the vacuum of space or in the middle of a rock).
I think, so far, the characters and locations I've touched up on include Berlin Germany 1945, Pennsilvania 1777, Richmond Virginia 2011-2012, the north Atlantic (Titanic) 1912, Hyrule for a timespan of 7 years, an alternate Kansas sometime in the 1940s (Oz), the Land of Oz for a timespan of 4-5 days, the planet Lucifer (a world from another story I wrote) relative to Earth time the year 5001...and a few other places. Keep in mind that many of the places come from alternate timelines or the other dimesnions. I'm trying to incooperate more movies and video games (but I just love books so much).
I think, however, as you mentioned the Cynder bug, I worked out my video game characters as being biologically normal, without their bugs, and more personality, but the tasks that they do remain the same...most of the time. My version of Link, for example, had his timeline screwed up by my main character crashing an IDEA machine into the Hyrule Castle (Ocarina of Time). My main character ended up having the Ocarina tossed to him instead of Link, so he has to pretend to be Sheik in place of Zelda to help Link along as close to his original story as best as possible.
