Yeah, you're right ^_^
Especially in languages like English or French, because other languages like Italian or Japanese don't have that "problem". That is also why it's kinda difficult for us to pronounce English words correctly (I'm Italian, by the way), because they're not written like they're pronounced, for us...

Wow, il tuo italiano è davvero buono :D Complimenti!
Anch'io spero di imparare bene il giapponese un giorno, ma per ora so solo i kana, qualche kanji e qualche frase ^_^
How many other languages do you know? My two main foreign languages are English and Spanish, but I'm really interested in many other different languages.

grazie! i can speak so-so italian and english (and beginner's japanese). although i focus more on reading and writing for both italian and japanese, rather than actual speaking. even though i write like an idiot on the internet, i am fairly proficient in english. i love language! your english is excellent!!
yeah, i'm american, so of course i'm surrounded by english, but i've gone out of my way to try to be good at it, learn lots of uncommon words, study old english and read classic english literature, that sort of stuff. i really enjoy study and language so my motivation was out of interest.
the stereotype here is that americans are pretty dumb and speak bad english. i wouldn't say americans are very much dumber than any other group of people, but i would agree that the proficiency level of the average person is 'basic.'

I see... It's always easier and pleasant when you study something you're really interested in
Well, luckily 'stereotype' doesn't correspond to 'reality' most of the time. Of course some people, American or not, could be very dumb and short-minded, but they're also everywhere else... u_u

well as a guy it's more natural for me to use short form and throw around a lot of da, especially on the internet or in a comic
da isn't really exactly the short form of desu either, they're similar but still kind of different, you can't always just replace da with desu to me more casual
like, it's totally improper grammar and weird sounding to say 'daka' you can't say that, you have to say 'desuka'

I mostly use Google translator to navigate my way through Pixiv, it's good for figuring out tags, but anything more in-depth like a conversation is going to come out wonky after translation. It'd be pretty nice to learn the language, at best all I can do is recognize common tags that I search for, and understand a few things that I hear spoken.
Well it's nice to know that artists are appreciated there, I was concerned by the lack of comments I've been seeing. I really should comment more, but I don't want to come off as rude for only being able to type in English, or as a terribly illiterate person for using a translator that would get the grammar and structure all wrong.

i'm teaching myself using various online resources
mostly i am learning vocab and kanji at the moment, so i just take a photo of something like a face or a kitchen and write everything on it over and over (using manga studio). i'm also doing simple beginner's grammar.
for kanji i use jisho.org and for grammar i use guidetojapanese.org
i still haven't found a good list of prepositions yet, one that shows how they are used in various sentences
