I think he was a letter off. Rather than 'Food Growth' he made it 'Foot Growth' ans in growing several hundred feet taller. Although the other interpretation of that might be interesting too.

or maybe it did work as food growth and it vastly enlarged the food in his belly, causing a mega growth in nutrients making him grow and grow
