I Never Knew Just What It Was
... and I guess I never will. Finally put the finishing touches on this work in progress, including finally making a decision on what it was that I was looking at -- sort of. The children's song "The Marvelous Toy," made famous by Peter, Paul and Mary, is one of my favorites, but what does the toy actually look like? This is my impression. In the song it appears to be able to walk, or at least march, and it seems to have some kind of locomotive-like elements. In the picture I'm apparently fascinated by this gizmo which seems to be a little bit of everything, perhaps some sort of magical proto-Transformer.
I did this entirely in SAI -- the first version of the line art was very fast, and I'm happy that it is getting faster for me.

The Marvelous Toy was (is) one of my favourite songs too. I've always envisioned the toy as being sort of flying-saucer-shaped, zipping along on little wheels until it comes to an abrupt stop, then whirrrring as it spins in place. :)
I usually listen to this song in conjunction with "Six White Boomers" every Christmas. :)

Whistling was the only thing Jennie heard as she found herself on the floor. She moved toward the source of the sound, not noticing the crinkling sound her pampered rear made. The small steam toy only seemed to get father away from her. She eventually noticed why it was so much harder walking toward it, her legs were shorter than she remember. The room wasn't bigger, she was a small cub again. The last thing she remembered before her cat nap was a gift she got from her uncle.
The gift was a small steam pink style robot. She put two and two together and the robot was already in the kitchen. She decided it would be faster if she just tried to crawl for it. About half way down the hall her mother lifted her up. "Now now baby, it's ok, you can play with the toys later, we have to get you cleaned up and ready for your first birthday party tonight" she smiled at her daughter innocently.
