A tanuki, or "raccoon dog", is the name for the species Nyctereutes procyonoides: Literally, "night-wandering raccoon-oid". They're distinguished from other canids (they're technically very distant relatives of the dog) by their winter torpor, their tree-climbing claws, and their large external balls.

I love tanukis so freaking much (and you guessed it, "Pom Poko" got me into the whole scene too) so to see a pic like this absolutely knocked me over sideways... Eeeeeee! ^^ *gives him loads of really gigantic hugs*
