Leather Feathers - Red-Tail and Barn Owl
An idea I suddenly had one day while working on a mask and cutting out countless leather feathers - what if I made pendants out of the feathers, and painted them like actual raptor feathers?
Here are two feathers, mostly experiments to figure out how I'll make the rest. One features waxed thread wrapping and a leather bead, and the other features wire wrapping. I'm terrible at wire wrapping, and I think I just need practice! If anyone has some good tutorials, I'd love to see them.
Actual raptor feathers are illegal to own in the United States, which gave me the idea to make leather feathers :) These are much sturdier than real feathers (and legal to own!). These feathers are painted front and back, and come with a length of brown suede lace. These are designed as pendants, but they can be used to decorate anything! Hair, bags, walls, whatever!
These are each available for sale in my Etsy shop!
Red-Tail - http://www.etsy.com/listing/9521321.....eather-leather (Sold!)
Barn Owl - http://www.etsy.com/listing/9521384.....eather-pendant (Sold!)
Edit - Wow those went fast! I'll just have to make more :D
I can also make leather feathers from ANY bird, real or imaginary! Want a gryphon feather, let me know!

For a 4 1/2 (like the barn owl) it's $15, and for a 7 inch (like the red-tail) it's $20, and that includes your choice of wrapping, a bead if you want one and suede lace to hang it from. These are 7-oz leather, meaning they're about 5mm thick, so they're not totally flat like a regular feather.
They're made from leather? I've never used the material, but that's a really lovely result. Did you just cut them in the shape of feathers and then paint them that way? I'm curious because I've been looking into ways to create fake feathers that I can paint as a merch for my comic. These are beautiful, definitely would love to see more!

And I think they would make great earrings! Though I would suggest the 4 1/2 inch ones for that, unless your fursuit has HUGE ears.

I have a journal here with information :) http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3265006/ And I can use lighter and smaller leather for earrings.
Oh my God, they look so real! Awesome!
I didn't know it is illegal to own raptor feathers in the US. What do you do when you find a real raptor feather on the ground? I find them often on the ground here in Germany and keep them for my collection. Or is it just illegal to sell them?
How much do your leather feathers cost? I'm interested in one! :3
