Symphony #41 in C-Dur, "Jupiter", Movement #1 - Allegro Vivace, K.551, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
10 minutes 29 seconds
Mozart's forty-first, final and best symphony was named for the king of the gods, Jupiter. It is scored for Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Horn, Trombone, Timpani, Violin I, Violin II, Viola, and Cello/Bass. I consider this recording to be the finest multi-track recording that I have ever done, and am so happy to finally be able to post it here!
This movement from the symphony was a challenge to record, find a good copy of 15 years later, and make small enough to fit FAnet's uploading guidelines!
Recording the 10 unique lines of music onto a 4-track tape machine was done as follows:
1) First the click track (metronome), Cello/Bass, and Timpani lines were recorded on tracks 1, 2 & 3. The Timpani line was played and mixed with the Horn line and recorded together on track 4. Tracks 2 and 4 were played and mixed with the Trombone line and recorded all together on track 1.
2) The Bassoon was recorded onto track 3, and the Oboe onto track 4. Tracks 3 and 4 were played and mixed with the Flute line onto track 2.
3) The Violin II line was recorded onto track 4. Track 4 was played and mixed with the Violin II line onto track 3.
4) The Violin I line was then recorded onto track 4.
The first tape I found of this recording was all muddled and degraded. The second one I found had quotes from the movie Amadeus mixed all through it, and came out at slightly over 10Mb when recorded as a 128bps mp3. While listening to what was on an unmarked side of some other mix tape...I found this good recording to use! And it had the full "warm-up" opening so I was able to time the beginning of the mp3 exactly...and it came in at 9.8Mb at 128bps!
Realized on Yamaha DX-100 synthesizer, Roland drum machine, effects boxes, and Tascam Porta-1 4-track tape recorder. Best listened to with headphones!
