I was moving some concrete lids earlier- when i was carrying one to the van one of my colleagues said "oh man, look at the size of that spider- it's huge!!" and pointed at the heavy lump of concrete i was carrying!! I promptly dropped it and retreated to a safe distance (ran away screaming like a little girl), and then saw this sitting on another lump of concrete which was under the one i'd picked up
This was taken from a distance away at maximum camera zoom. It must've been about 7cm across, i didn't get close enough to measure it!!
I only had the small work's camera with me so not the best quality... Still makes me shiver though!!

I completely agree, they do a marvelous job of keeping annoying flying things at bay. That's why i never kill spiders, even when i find one on the ceiling above my bed at 2am !!
With the aid of a long stick, this one and another one was came across were relocated to another pile of concrete and they scuttled off to munch creepy crawlies and scare the bejesus out of the next person to come across them!!

Not quite, there was a lot more cussing!!
The guys went over to have a look at it and i cautiously followed- seeing what a monster it was i got the camera (which actually had some charge in the batteries for once) and got a few snaps before we relocated it out of the way...

So do it- the ones that are a right pain in the backside to catch
I certainly moved fast when i heard the word 'spider' and saw one of the guys pointing at the lump of concrete i was carrying
This one suprised me though- it just stayed there while i got the photos, then when we went to move it to another pile of concrete it just ambled along slowly... I was expecting it to scurry off quickly!!

My mate gets creeped out by spiders over there... And when he comes here to visit, he gets really, REALLY freaked by ALL spiders. Can't imagine why, since some of ours are potentially lethal and all. He's declared me to be his designated spider smoosher, since I'm kinda used to seeing black widows and brown recluses. (Grew up in the country, where if you saw either of those you just squished it and went about your day.)
I had one run across my (bare) hand when i was moving housebricks round my dad's years ago, and never liked them since. Small ones i can deal with, big ones like this beasty just creep me out
i haven't the foggiest why he might be creeped out!! I've seen photos of brown recluse bites and would NOT like to get bitten by one of those!! Nasty little buggers...
I can just imagine you chasing a spider round the house, trying to smoosh it with a mop like in your 'fez of awesomeness' picture

Lol, that was my second reaction after the "holy-heck-what-spider-where?!" was over!!
The problem now is that all the concrete items we were moving have been keep out in what could loosely be called 'semi-dense woodland' (trees by the side of a railway) for a couple of months, and so have become overgrown and a haven for large spiders and other creepy crawlies... Immense fun when you go to pick one up and something scurries off into another nook or cranny in the next piece to be picked up
This was taken at nearly maximum zoom on the camera, i ought to take my SLR and get an extreme close-up of some of the giant spiders living in one of the drying rooms at work!! They fascinate me, but creep me out at the same time >.<
