This was supposed to be a speedpaint, too, but it took about two, maybe two and a half hours to complete. Maybe three? Anyway: golden hour, mountains, and Neil Campbell Ross, mercilessly ripped off. Enjoy, me hearties!

I'm aiming to do something that's probably contradictory with speedpainting. I'm trying to get faster at storytelling via speedpainting. I'm "old school" (meaning I'm old), which means I'm at my happiest when I can start with pencils and sketching and designing before diving into painting, and that doesn't help either. All these factors combine against the idea of speedpainting, but I think I'm okay with that, when you get right down to it. Maybe it means I'll never be as zoom-y as the fastest ones, but I knew that'd be the case going in. So long as I end up making art that gets this sort of reaction (and thank you, ma'am, for taking the time to say so!), I'll be happy.
I swear it's just practice. I do art for a living. Lots of practice.
One big thing that helps with speed: thinking like a painter. That means thinking in terms of shapes, not line. It's a whole different way of approaching art. It uses value just like drawing does but when you paint you *start* with shape, which means you're building with big masses, not specifics. That's usually what slows folks down (including me!): they try and draw when they ought to paint.
Going from big shapes to small, general to specific, is critical for attaining speed. Does that make sense?

Oh dude! Its one of those cult classic games that most people missed but its got this great 80s sci-fi feel to it as a well as a unique art style. Over the years it came out on pretty much everything, PC/Consoles. It was originally called Another World, tho the console versions called it Out Of this World.
the fastest way i can update you is to point you to the wiki

The polished version of the game is still available on the guys website for like $10

Wow...very, very high praise. Jeff Jones is one of my favorite modern painters. This was a learning exercise done using an image of Neil Campbell Ross as a starting point. I took it in my own weird direction (loving every minute of the ride, too). Nothing like working under the shadow of a master.
I worked from Neil Campbell Ross's composition, at least at first, so I can't tell you what sort of rocks he was thinking of, but I can point you towards Karst topography for some inspiration:

Hope that helps!

Bah! It will always be here for you. This piece of art loves you!! It would hug you, but that might result in your getting buried under tons of rock.
.....at some point I will be consistently funny, I swear. It will happen. Bear with me. 0_0
And thank you, sir. I have an idea now....what if we did something like a series of images, the next being based on the artist's exploration of the one before? Thinkage for you.
