I think if it had a more balanced text-to-picture ratio, the longer text version would be just as suitable. But in writing stories I find that once you trim down the redundant and unnecessary sentences, a streamlined story does flow much better and gets the same idea across.
That said, I like this shorter version better because it still has the essence of the piece...maybe you trimmed out a little too much, but it is an improvement over the longer one.

That was my impression too and I always made an effort to cut down my captions and comments. But surprisingly, the comments and favs on this one are overwhelmingly in favour of the longer story (by a ratio of about 2:1). It's also much easier to tell a more complete, layered story with more text; Trying to create that with half the wordcount you find yourself using lots of cleche phrases.
Since the preference is still mixed though, I think I'll post a simple text version for all my larger caps (you're right on the word/picture ratio, the large caption reads like a book with pictures). Thanks for your opinion.
