Technically there was supposed to be 2 varieties. The older models had a gunner who's primary job was to deal with the heavy munition payloads (Torpedoes/missiles/bombs) and the ion cannon, and a pilot to work the flying and the main blasters.
The second generation Y-Wings, circa Battle of Yavin, were more computerized and required a single operator.
