c.c You may all blame
leinir for my lack of productivity these past few days. I was introduced to C.J. Cherryh's Faded Sun trilogy, and didn't come up for air until it spat me back out again. Leinir mentioned being frustrated by a lack of illustrations of the alien Mri without their all-concealing robes and veils in place. I had to concur. There is precious little of them, even on the internet, and in my casual search I didn't come across any drawings of them unveiled. All the cover art is fairly typical of the late 70s when these books were written. There are some depictions of what is probably supposed to be a female Mri without veils, but they look mostly like your typical 70s scifi pinup girl.
The Mri are not human.
They are humanoid, and near-human enough that humanity looks on them and finds them beautiful. I tried to make a catalog of the distinguishing features of the species while I was reading, because the bug bit me and I wanted to try my hand at attempting to illustrate what these proud, noble warriors might look like without their concealing veils. Ironically, the notes and doodles I made are something the Mri themselves would find invasive, immodest, and horribly offensive in the hands and sight of tsi-mri (those who are not Mri). They are an intense and private people. They do not show their faces to strangers, but the artist in me is perhaps to human and too curious to leave it alone.
*chuckles* It's funny how even fictional characters can sweep you up in their ideologies if the world-building is good enough. Cherryh is a master of such things. If you prefer your aliens fuzzier but no less complex, I highly recommend reading her Chanur series. So anyway, this is my personal interpretation of how the Mri might look.

*giggles* i'm so sorry for ruining your productivity! *hugs* but good things came of it - i am now more convinced than i were that i need to throw some money to someone (and with that i mean you ;) ) to get some more artwork made with them *giggles* ;) You have, most definitely caught them - this is not entirely what was in my mind's eye, but... interestingly, it is now! What was in my head never quite solidified, so the lookkept moving around, but... you've really caught it :)
...and, hey, you can always say that you have portrayed the Elee *giggles* ;)

Mmm, possibly. =) But then, the Elee are white and their eyes blue and their manes are longer. Pale and strange, similar, but different. Tsi-mri. *chuckles* I understand now why they've mostly been portrayed as differently colored humans by artists. You pretty much have to read the whole trilogy closely to pick up on all the descriptive cues. The desert-dwelling aspect combined with the other physical descriptions made me want to make them a little bit reptilian and a little bit leonine, slender and angular and hard-muscled. The face is the hardest part, because the features still have to be regular enough for most of humanity to think they're attractive. It can't be too beast-like or too animalistic, just exotic and alien.
And sure! I'm interested in drawing them more, so if you want to talk commission stuff, feel free to drop me a note about it. =)

This, of coures, is entirely true - they are, indeed, Tsi'mri :) Yeah, i realise that i would have had to re-read the books, taking notes under way in other places than my head, to have made a coherent enough picture of them, without your help :) It just now struck me that there is something... very slightly Na'vi about them - i don't know if you remember the, arguably, very small bit of imagry which was shown of the desert dwelling Na'vi in Avatar, but they had something of this quality to them. Brain-fart, there, but... :)
And, note away! *giggles* :)
