For a while when I was a kid my ambition was to be a cartoonist for a magazine like Car-Toons, Hot Rod Cartoons, or any number of others. The only story I every drew to submit was this one, undated, but probably produced around 1966. I can't remember if I did submit it or not, but most likely I was too big a coward. Just as well, in retrospect. It isn't that good. In treatment and content, though, it was fairly typical of the lame gags and bad puns of such magazines. (They're still around in some places. Check it out if you can find one.)
The story is full of topical references. The cars drawn are real competetors on the funny car strip. You can even buy a 1/64 scale Little Red Wagon made in metal by Jonny Lightning. "Unc" was the editor and one of the prominent contributors to Car-Toons. He invented the small football head caracters like the one on the executioner's block. He called them Gremlins, but I don't thinkthere was ever an explanation where they came from or what they were. One of my favourite cartoonists in the genre was "Pappy" Lemons. The style of this is loosely based on his, I guess... very loosely. Unusual for me, it seems to be drawn with a marker. Someday I really must exhume this peice from its tomb and re-scan it -- the file is terrible.
