Trying to figure out a workflow to use charcoal in an A4 comic.
First the smudgy stuff does whatever the hell it wants, then the fixation spray fucks it up, then the scanner fucks it up some more so out go subtle details.
I'll probably have to work with a shitton of value variation since using large shapes of gray in any controlled manner is not possible and looks more like an accident than deliberate aka the backgrounds suck.
It is also impossible to get once fully black areas fully white because my paper is a dick and to get shapes fully black because my scanner is a dick.

When working with scanning charcoal in, I generally adjust the Levels in photoshop to get more pure whites and blacks where they're supposed to be. And fixative spray is a bitch. You have to spray it from a pretty good distance away or else it causes running... and that shit is toxic as fuck. I remember one one of my classmates went out on the balcony to spray his stuff... and did it right in front of the air intake. @_@ We had to leave the room for 20 minutes.
