The brain fills in allot of information.
To take advantage of it you have to add an additional step that requires you to think backwards.
That is, not the placement of the subject but instead the placement of the observer in relation to the subject.
Notice that your eyes are immediately drawn to the face on the right.
In a split-second the brain interprets angle of the pose and restricted field of vision as the subject being within your personal-space
(starts at from 6 to 3 feet for most)
close enough that you could be touching and requires active attention.
In fact it is difficult to look at these 2 images side by side
(with a little space between)
without your attention repeatedly wandering back to the one on the right
– the brain is hardwired to work that way.
