Work Sketch - Little Princes Palm and Alder
...well, I actually managed to get the sketches done at work, but I had to finish inking at home.
Anyhoo, here are the other two princes, Palm and Alder. Palm is the youngest of the three while Alder is the oldest (by like 15 minutes or so from Arjuna). They're triplets, but since Alder emerged first, he is the one who will inherit the throne.
I realized two things while working on these two.
1. If you were a little boy and your parents, the Emperor and Empress of the land, told you that you would some day be the new Emperor, you'd have a LOT of self-confidence! ...bordering on arrogance. That gives me a few things to think about.
2. The island that the girls and the princes inhabit is called Calico...yet I didn't have even one calico cat designed...until now ^^; ...that's strange. But now, I've got one. HOORAY! I think Palm gets his calico from his father while Alder gets his markings from their mother.
Arjuna is noticeably different in appearance from his brothers and his parents. A story leaped out at me regarding this, but that will have to wait until later. For now, these are the royal kids ...ah, from Calico, anyway. I'll have to draw the daughters of Kitwa eventually, but that can wait, too

Well, you know, with the largest island being Calico, it makes sense that there would be some calicoes there that weren't exclusively female. Who knows, maybe a mutation will come along and the more males will be calico in this world. ...but, since Catriona doesn't exist in this world, I am not bound by these laws. ^_^
Thank ya! I'm glad you like them.

You're absolutely right, darling! It's a rule I tend to go by myself as well; even though I try to keep things as realistic to modern-day society, there is still that little bit of artistic freedom you can sum up in; "such and such exists/happens like this because I'm the author/artist and I say so" =^_^=
*huggles*
Either way, you're very welcome, darling! They really look fantastic!

Well, this exists because the Calico breed as we know it today exists because of direct human intervention...in other words, because they were bred that way. But, in this universe, humans don't exist and so their specific breeds do not exist, either. The "calico" that you see here exists from years of natural selection and because of that, it stands to reason that it would not be beneficial for the breed to have exclusions of the male gender. That makes no sense. Therefore, if cats were left alone to procreate on their own, a calico breed could emerge, but not the one we know. Beyond that, if a person wants to cite factual tidbits regarding a fictional world, I would inturn ask them this, "If male calicos are rare, how much more rare is kitten both with a blue coat, or a purple coat, or a pink coat?"
The fact is, in a fictional universe without humans, some of the rules of the game have changed. A Siamese cat won't exist because there is no Siam. The breed can exist in appearance, but it will not be called Siamese. It's not an issue of, "I'm the author and I say so..." it's more, "without humans and in a fictional universe, things are bound, ne, certain to exist in misalignment the world we know ad share. Instead of fighting it, just sit back and enjoy the adventure of exploring a brand new way of life in a brand new universe."

You know, you're absolutely right. Even when someone still tries to explain certain oddities that they have created in either visual art or written art (such as the way I have employed to explain why one of my feline characters and some of her sisters have purple fur), there still is the fact that if one would try to explain it through terms that we all have come to know from this world we live in, it would not be correct because the world where the characters in question live in is a completely different one.
I suppose it's just power of habit, and for a big part convenience, that people who create stories tend to stick with descriptions and names for breeds of cats and dogs as we all know them, simply because everyone knows right away what is meant when a character is described as a Siamese cat or a Siberian Husky or what have you. It would take way too much time to re-invent the whole entire world and history of the world as we know it to make every little detail explainable in a story, after all.
And indeed, when someone has a purple-furred cat character or a green-furred fox or whatever, then why not a male calico cat? That's absolutely not any stranger or more unusual than a purple cat or a green fox, and in fact it's even more believable because calicoes do exist in the world as we know it, as opposed to purple cats and green foxes =~.^=

Pretty much. In this universe, there are only fictional cat breeds. Boomer is a Red Hawk, for example, but that's the name of his tribal people. Sugar is from Cathal and all cats from that region of Catriona are blue, but they have no specific identifying name. They are just cats from Cathal. The exception is the calico, but that's simply because the name still suits the breed (CALICO: an animal having a spotted or particolored coat.) Since the name isn't indicative of any known region in our world, the name still suits. ...of course, it's the name of the largest island in Catriona. So, technically, Sweetheart, Candy, Tange and the others are ALL Calicoes. ...except Mint and Sugar. Palm just happens to look like a calico that we identify with in this universe. But, again, when left to breed on their own, gender exclusive offspring isn't really beneficial...except in reptiles. ...but I digress. ^^;

Exactly. With the way you have established and fleshed out the world where your characters live in, you would need new names for the different breeds of cats that live in your world. Which, by the way, I envy you for, because as much work as it is, you have done an amazing job with creating the whole world and all the different species and breeds and mythology and history. As good a writer as I am, I don't think I could do that as well =~.^=
*giggles*
And yes, that definition of calico is very accurate, even if it's the third definition of calico, as calico is also the name for a fabric =~.^= Bu-u-ut that is neither here not there and has nothing to do with this conversation =~.^=

Alder does look like a confident fellow
And I'm trying to figure our what Palm is saying. He is definitely talking to an adult, looking up a bit, trying to convince them of something.
Maybe something like, "But mom, that thing is going to fall off the cart if you don't tie it down"
Anyway, nice work, Kitten!
