Spotted hyena, striped hyena and aardwolf.
To me, hyena is a symbolism of the dual nature of male and female and a blurring of gender lines and roles. I included both masculine and feminine imagery, integrating the two to highlight this aspect of the totem creature.

It's done completely in acrylic paint. :)
I will admit that African art isn't my favorite cultural work, but there are some things I really, really like - it's a massive continent and a whole lot of people - there are so many variations. Some of the tribes produce really stunning things. A lot of places haven't changed nearly so much as the rest of the world yet, so it's not surprising a lot of the art is the way it has always been. But the contemporary work in some places has changed immensely! :)

                    Squee~
I feel so loved right now, it's not even worth being sarcastic.
Also, only spotted hyenas have the gender confusion. Females of the striped and brown specie of hyenas don't have the enlarged clitoris.
Another random fact. There were no spotted hyenas on Noa's Ark, according to the Bible. Spotties were considered gender shifters or hermaphrodites, and thusly, an abomination to God.
They got the abomination part half right with a certain hyena...

                    Yup, yup.
Well, sometimes, the cubs are killed by the birth-mother's sister. I believe it's from jealousy. But, yes, hyenas are very gentle and playful in nature. Not vicious monsters, like in movies. Packs are very, very social. Like, someone could write a book on hyena sociology.
Only crocuta crocutamake the "laugh" as heard in The Lion King. This "laugh" is usually an expression of fear or an attempt to scare away predators.

I saw a really neat show on animal planet (I think it was called 'Wild' and they had a man who was accepted into the clan while filming. Really incredible, he could touch and scratch the wild hyenas, sleep next to them and follow them on foot when they did patrols. What an amazing experience he must have had!

Now, he's what I call "Luckier than a Leprechaun with a horseshoe, rabbit's foot, and anything else that makes one seem more lucky." ... I don't really say that, but you get the point.
I really, really, really envy that man. He's doing something I've only dreamed of. Makes me wonder if I'll really make it to Africa one day.
I haven't been this not sarcastic for a while.

I really like this. The use of warm (hot colors) such as orange yellow and red give it a visually enjoyable feel to the eye, and the greys make it connect well together.
The idea of using african art as the idea for the style was also an unique but good idea, as simplistic as it may seem, also complex and discerning.
