Living the Dream!
I love this car so much! Ever since I was 5 years old, I've wanted to own a DeLorean. At that age it really was the stuff dreams were made of. I had never even seen one in person until was 8. I remember I had butterflies in my stomach and my hands were shaking when I actually got to touch one. I used to draw pictures, all sorts of stuff. I would pretend about DeLoreans! I remember cutting gull wing doors in cardboard boxes and make believe I was driving around. It was just years and years of dreaming about this car.
When I got my drivers license and years of yearning for a DeLorean engrained in my mind I always sought out the most unconventional cars to own, just so it was different like the DeLorean. The closest I came to a DeLorean was a 1985 Pontiac Fiero. I loved that car but it still wasn't the real deal. One day I put my foot down and made it one of my life goals to make my dream a reality. It wasn't if I get a DeLorean, it was when I get a DeLorean.
For about 3 or 4 years I searched the internet every night waiting for the right one I wanted for the right price. I wanted a 1983 because I was born in 1983 (yeah I know I'm corny), with grey leather interior and a manual transmission. 83s are a bit harder to come by but sure enough I found exactly what I was looking for! I was so excited.
I have owned my DeLorean for a couple of years now. I have done a lot of upgrades and repairs to make it a daily driver. It only had 17,000 miles on it when I got and the seller got a little green in the face when I told them I was going to drive the wheels off the car. I did not buy this car not as investment to make money and keep it stored away. I bought this car to enjoy it and drive it.
It really is a surreal feeling to actually to get something you've wanted almost your entire life. That feeling of wanting something so bad just disappears. I was like "holy shit! I got it! What do I do now?" That question was quickly answered when I started her up for the first time. The answer is drive.

Open highways the car cruises right along. The car is extremely ass heavy but it doesn't get get squirrely at high speeds and still feels pretty solid. In the rain is a different story. The care will totally plow in the rain so I am super careful. City driving sucks. You can definitely feel the car has some weight to it and with the manual rack and pinion steering you gotta be on your toes. There is no zipping thought traffic in this beast.
Wow, I didn't know it had manual steering.
You should mount a camera in the car, because it would be funny to see a montage of all the looks people give you
Even after all these years, it's still one of the coolest looking cars ever. Kind of a timeless, almost spaceship-type look. And this picture is total win!

OMG cooper, we need to get together for a photo shoot, i built my own hoverboard last oct before mff: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7671340/
I dont own a deloreon but i have built my own hoverboard.. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7671340/
I heard about that place, I built one with my dad just using stuff around the house and just had to buy a couple things. I cant express how awsome you owning a deloreon is, its truely a rolling work of art. More so for the cool value due to bttf. Just make sure you have enough road to reach 88. LOL that would actually be a funny sticker for your car, but officer i was only trying to reach 88 mph.
The car has power locks but there is a manual switch inside to unlock the doors. There has been instances where both the power locks and manual locks fail so yes you can get locked in. The most famous case was with Johnny Carson who was a lead shareholder of DeLorean at the time, picked up his brand new DeLorean and on the way home the battery died, locking him inside the car on the side of a freeway. In a worse case scenario DeLorean incorporated a safety feature in the front windshield where its held in place with break away tabs so you can kick the glass out from the inside with your foot with little effort.
Similar story with my '56 Citroen. I'd wanted one since I was just a little thing and saw them parked on the streets in Europe. Found one that was little more than a gutted shell, and if I can ever get it shipped from Dad's place out here I'm going to drive it regularly.

I couldn't have a trailer queen. These cars were meant to drive!

That was a stroke of luck, yeah. I'd been looking for one but would have settled for a 70s or 80s model like the ones I used to see. Never expected to find one this old but there it was, parked in the back lot behind a collision repair shop.
One of the older features this one has is the full-length canvas top that stretches over the trunk too (like this: http://dayerses.com/data_images/pos.....cv-azls-04.jpg). The steel trunk was an option in '57 and was so successful that it became standard in '58. The cloth trunk lid latches so solidly that it's a pain to get open, though.

This might sound like a corny reply, but your words nearly made me cry. You are an inspiration CooperTom. I have been wanting a DeLorean as well, for many years. I will someday drive one.... and I would like to one day own one. Though my plans are for a newer car, you really make me want to never forget my dreams of owning the car that I feel a special connection with.
This picture, is also filled with badassery.

I didn't want to be the first to say it but... it looks like you've got some serious cameltoe going on in that pic! XD *hides*
In all srsness though, it's a great pic and a great car! I want whatever camera you've got, because the colors and clarity are perfect! And the overall composition is very solid and well done!
Sorry, leave it to me to talk about the picture itself and not the car! ^^

lesee... when i first saw a DeLorean and said to my dad "omg that car looks so cool, i want one!" my dad laughed and said there are MUCH better cars out there. he didnt explain the specifics because i was too young to understand at the time i first saw one.
later down the road i asked him again and he told me the specifics about why they're such a rare car. the thing had lots of problems, specifically the door hinges and how problematic they can be and the fact that the car isnt fast and that in the end, its more trouble than its worth.
my dad is a 20+ year auto mechanic and is currently in the process of building a Chevy C-10 from the ground up with premier parts. i myself have a 2004 mustang after the unfortunate accident involving my 2000 camaro which is now RIP. :(
now that my opinion on DeLorean's is out of the way, despite the fact that the car is not very appealing in my eyes or my dads, your story is very inspiring! i love that despite that your dream was somewhat unrealistic, you made it come true. :3
that car is gonna be a lot happier being driven to hell and back rather than just sitting in some garage collecting dust by some collector.
you drive that silver spaceship out into the sunset and dont you look back!

Back to the future is what i blame for my love of gull wing cars and such. But let me tell yah. I dunno what it is but i wants me a friggen 3rd or 4th generation model El Camino but if i can't have something in those years i can settle for the 5th gen ones. How funny the last model year for that car happens to be the year i was born. Naturally many think. Well why don't you get the car that represents your year? BAH! Are you kidding? I want one of those lovely monsters of sexy not a boxy city slicking pile of crap that they turned the 87 into. The 87 looks to much like a Thunder Bird or a Cadillac from those years. Mostly want it for the truck bed and that.....i just want it!!
Ahh that is the other passion of mine. Aircooled VWs! I have a 73 Karmann Ghia, 74 Super Beetle, 74 Thing and a 75 VW Bus!
Hope you get her fixed up! They are fun classic cars that are cheap to maintain, and sip gas whats there not to love about them?! Except the heater. Even that I think is a myth. I drive my bug in the winter and heat in that car will cook you alive.

You have a Ghia, Super Beetle, Thing and Bus! Damn man....I don't think you could pry me away from your house or my husband. LOL Awesome collection of cars right there. Yep, soon as we get this house my plan is to set money back so I can get the welding done and learn to drive her. lol Bought a car I can't even drive, but that's fixable.
Johnny pulls up out of nowhere in a bright flash as he comes running towards you:
Johnny: Cooper! You gotta come back with me!
Cooper: Where?
Johnny: Back to the future!
*opens a trash can and starts rummaging for trash*
Cooper: Wait a minute . John? What are you doing?
Johnny: I need fuel. Quick! Go ahead! get in the car!
Cooper: Woah woah woah wait a minute. What are you talking about? What happens to me in the future? Do I become an asshole or somethin?
Johnny: Nono Cooper you turn out fine. It's these furries Cooper something has to be done about these furries!

That's awesome there's a car from the year you were bor that you've always wated. That wouldn't work for me. I can't think of ANY cool cars from 1978. Sort of makes me wish I was born in 1957, or 1964 1/2.
But I totally know what you mean about wanting a car your entire life and finally getting it. The two cars I own are the two cars I've always REALLY wanted, and they were both cars I saw in movies. The Beetle was defintely Herbie inspired, but the Lincoln is a bit more complicated. Animal House probably accounts for most of it, but Lincolns showed up in a lot of movies.
I should just give you my BTTF 2 barcode license plate. I never do anything with it, and you seem like you'd really appreciate it. Mine actually looks better than the one pictured here: http://backtothefuture.wikia.com/wi....._license_plate

Yup still have the mechanical Bosch fuel injection system. I installed new upgraded fuel pump, new fuel accumulator, new fuel injectors, new fuel distributor, new air aux valve, new fuel filter, all new coolant hoses, new water pump, upgraded stainless steel coolant tank, new radiator, upgraded stainless still braided fuel injector lines, K&N air filter, new tie rod ends, upgraded headlight relay module, new fuel sending unit, new cd player and probably a whole bunch of other stuff I can't think of!
So... pretty much all-new injection, minus the air metering unit. Man, that couldn't have been cheap. The 4-cylinder K-Jets are expensive, and I suspect the 6s and 8s even worse. Lemme guess... the injector nozzles were the cheapest bits?
Made quite a few discoveries in making my old Porsche 924 run again, after sitting in a field for 20-odd years.
1: Old gas can turn into something like road tar and pretty much wreck everything fuel-related
2: Fuel distributors aren't nearly as scary as one may think. Generally, a good soaking in carb cleaner, new diaphragms, and new o-rings will get it working like new.
3: Do NOT cheap out and get an inexpensive replacement fuel pump. Always go with Bosch, no matter the cost.
4: Invest in a good fuel pressure test set. Invaluable tool when dealing with mechanical injection.
5: Yes, the distributor and nozzles are -supposed- to scream at you.
Really, once you take everything apart and see how it works, the K-Jets are pretty simple and really, really durable.

Ha ha yup the injectors were pretty cheap compared to everything else. The Fuel pump and fuel distributor alone were almost $500. I think total it was close to grand in parts just for the fuel system. I used to have a 78 Porsche 928 with the same set up but I never got my hands dirty with it though. I know everything about the Bosch electronic system that I have in my 1975 VW bus but when it came to working with mechanical on the DeLorean I was like oh shit but when I broke everything down its actually a pretty easy system. The one thing I didn't change was the frequency valve. Its almost 300 bucks! But I hear it buzzing so its doing its job. I'm leaving it alone for now. Ahh yes that weird ass whine noise that comes from the fuel distributor! Since the engine is in the back the fuel distributor is like right behind your head. You can hear it from inside the car.
Hee! I'd wondered if that wasn't the case - the fuel distributor so close like it is. *step on the accelerator, scream gets louder* O.o
Quite a disconcerting sound, for someone who'd never dealt with a K-Jet. Wonder if that wouldn't have been a customer complaint in the day?
Yep, brilliant system they designed. Rochester's system (as used on the '57-'62 Chevys) was very similar. Fondly referred to as 'constant drool' injection, since fuel was always being sprayed. That's what struck me hardest - they spray fuel constantly when the engine is running, not pulsed as in a sequential-fire system (like Bosch's mechanical system on the 300SL). Yet, the mileage was pretty good on that old Porsche, and it ran great once everything was sorted.

The car still has the stock 130hp v6 in it. I replaced 80% of the fuel injection system with brand new Bosch parts. Replaced all the top end gaskets. Done all the basic maintenance like fluids, hoses and belts too. The engine only has about 18500 miles on it. Gonna run that till it dies. I don't think I would put that engine back in the car should anything happen to it. Its really poorly designed. They sell adapter plates. I'd love to drop in a simple 350 Chevy crate engine in there with a megasquirt fuel injection system and be done with it.
Very nice. The DeLorean was always a need car and in many ways a leap forward in design when compared to other cars of the time. Glad to hear that you drive it as well. That's the point of having a car like this, you have it to drive it and enjoy it. Plus when you drive it around you give others a chance to look at it and enjoy it as well. I've built cars for people that cost well over 250k and the car is never driven. It either sits in a garage or in a trailer. I could do that, I'd wanna drive it. I enjoy driving my hotrod. It gives you a special feeling. I'm sure yoy know that feeling. Although I will admit the car I have now is not my dream car. I hope to one day build my dream car. A 32 Ford open wheel roadster.
I need to dig up the pic of when a relative to our neighbor drove his Delorean over. Coming home from iRobot and nearly jumped out of my uncles moving car to get at the shiny car sitting on our street! Looking forward to when you recreate the BTTF movie poster in your Marty cosplay :3
Gotta love the DeLorean~
i loved them since the moment i saw the time machine in Back To the Future, though, having been born in '94 i hadn't seen one until a fluke in 2010 when one drove past in Attleboro, Massachusetts while we were in the parking lot of aWendy's. heh, i'd been dying to see one and hit my head on the window of my mom's van trying to quickly get a better look. hadn't seen one in person until 2011 when there was a car show in my (little) town of Mendon. turns out there was a DeLorean owner a town over from me this whole time. though i also sat in a Micheal J. Fox Parkinson's charity BTTF time machine at a sci-fi convention i went to solely to meet Christopher Lloyd, which i did, and got my BTTF model signed by him and James Tolken (Principal Strickland) i'd absolutely LOVE to own one, and i am so envious of you!~

its definitely a great feeling when I watch Back to the Future and can say I've met the man who played one of the major characters, and my favorite actor of his time and beyond.
but yeah, I hope you do. he's a great guy. I heard about him being there from a special showing of BTTF at a theater for the 25th anniversary.

Furst off I got to say DAMN! that is the exact same car but w/o all that fangle dangle gadget stuff they had in it for the Time Machine car they used in the Back To the Future car. Also I'm actually stunned that you were actually born a year b4 me! Also I'm glad that you finally got your dream car of your lifetime.
Actually DeLorean doors require LESS clearance than regular car doors.

But I still do park away from everyone to avoid dents. Dents are your worst nightmare when your car is made out of stainless steel.

Thats what ends up killing a lot of DeLoreans. People buy them and put them away as investments the problem is DeLoreans have mechanical fuel injection which is very picky about fuel quality. Once old gas gets into the system your in a world of trouble. Letting them sit is the worst thing you can do to a DeLorean.
I remember when I got my dream car, I saved up every pay check I receive to buy it. A 1992 Nissan skyline r32 with tan interior and black paint. I payed $14,500 for it and spent everyday cleaning it, polishing it, and driving it. Then the raining season came and flooded my entire neighborhood. Lost my house, my kawisaki, and the skyline. I had her for 3 months before I lost her. To this day I still look back at the photos of her and the first time I drove her. I was 18 when I got her.

My friends laugh and poke fun at me because I want one of these. I know there are a lot of issues with the electrical, but I still want one. I decided that if I can ever get one, I'd like to get an '82. However, getting one of these would have to come after getting a fursuit. I have to set my priorities.
:O
Love this car, man. Love this car. Personally would have ripped that engine out and gone with the Chevy crate with EFI, though for the price of picking up the car + the work you can pretty much just buy one from Delorean now.
I'll stick with my bundle of wires and batteries for now. Someday, Porsche. :P

I wonder if someone got a Delorean that had minor cosmetic damage on the hood, put the black mesa logo on the hood, I honestly couldn't think of 2 more sci fi things to merge. I've never seen one of these beasts locally (Newfoundland weather destroys cars easily) but its a staple of my era (along with Transformers, Ducktales and M.A.S.K)
Ah thats the beauty of it! To keep manufacturing costs as low as possible a large majority of the parts that make up the DeLorean were pre-existing parts from other other cars made by Renault, Peugeot or Volvo. DeLorean forums have lists of makes and models of cars you can use to cross reference parts. Any part that was made only for DeLorean can be found at the DeLorean company down in Texas where they have a warehouse full of new old stock parts that were shipped over from Ireland when the factory was closed. So even though is an obscure car you can practically get ever single nut and bolt for this car. Its funny, getting parts for the DeLorean is a piece of cake compared to another on one of my cars that I restored. A 1987 Puma Gti which is a hand made car from Sao Paulo, Brazil. That car was a bitch!
Haha thats awesome! I never would have guessed it would be that easy. Congrats on achieving your goal! I have a long list of dream cars but the one I am really trying to go after is a Lancia Thema 8.32. I really dont think there are many in North America so I will probably have to go to Italy and ship it over haha!
That is one of my dream cars to own one day. Though im just 18 and currently own a 02 Pontiac Grand Am (I love that car very much too) and am fixated on owning a 05/06 Pontiac GTO... I dream of having one of those so badly... then later park it next to a Fiero and a DeLorean... one day... hopefully...
Dude. Props to you man, you knew what you wanted since you were a kid, and when you were able you had that 'why the fuck not?' moment, and went out and got it. For a awesome car as well, I've ridden in a couple and driven one twice, the looks from folks were absolutely awesome even in the little bit I was in one. I recently had my own 'Waitaminute, why the fuck not' and got the Harley I had been wanting for better part of a decade. and I bought mine to put miles on as well, not be a garage queen, so I applaud you as well for that. :) Something that might be of interest if you aren't already aware, for an 83 it will probably run best on non-ethanol gasoline, and there's a website that can show you any stations close to where you live.

Always loved the Delorean. i know how you must felt when you got your paws on it.. theres one down the road from me thats been parked up for 5 years now. jacked up so the tyres arnt on the tarmac, but it hasnt moved.
he doesnt want to sell it. and i think he is getting quite pissed off at me asking him every few months..
personally i drive a 1982 Austin Mini. with loads of mods and extras.. although its only a 998 engine (not the original engine.. its the later 1990 metro lump) it flys and sounds the part.. something about the classic cars from this era..
my other fav car from around the 80's was the Rover 3500 SDi. with the Straight 6 3.5liter engine and manual 5 speed box. the drone out the tail pipe is to die for.. although even a scrappy one will set you back a fair price these days.
would be nice to see a short vid of it ticking over and a quick guide around it..

http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l.....v2vuo1_500.jpg I'm just going to put this right here.
Owning a DeLorean in one of my goals as well. I only have 2 more years before I can make it a reality. Other things had priority, house, LV and Scribble suits, and paying off my current car.
But I know EXACTLY where you're coming from. Since I was little, Back to the Future was always my favorite movie, and to this day, still is. I told myself, I'm gonna have one of those one day. And I can relate, I don't wanna store it away just to look at it, I want to actually drive it. Maybe not all the time, but definitely quite regularly.
I hope you get many many many years of enjoyment out of it. =)

GAAH! ESTOY TAN CELOSO! QUIERO UN DELOREAN! >XD
Wow what an awesome car, I too have always loved them. I think iconic and classic cars should not be stuffed away in some collectors garage just to sit and be pretty, I think they should be enjoyed, the only way possible by sitting behind the wheal and driving it down a highway. Damn now that would be a head turner to see going down a highway to see :).
There was a delorean parked at RF. I got
lostwolf to take a pic of me with it at night. I should have asked the authorization to sit inside and get a proper photo shoot ^^. I'll post the pic when he's processed the pics... In sure there will be other pics with it popping up on fa. I told the owner you had one and he did not know you.
The main reason i know you is because at AC i was scouting cat fursuits to find a maker who can pull it off, you're is one of the rare i thought successfully captured house cat traits properly. Hence i approached you To learn it was a jill. I was hanging out with a lion pride at parade, including qb-lion. As you can see i got myself a cute face ^^ otherwise I'm
