100 Faces... and one cactus.
A long time ago, a friend of mine was nice enough to buy me a tablet as a gift. It was quite a remarkable thing to do, and I'm ashamed that I've pretty much done nothing with it ever since. Well, recently I decided it's about time I put the thing to work. I figured I could use it to do practice sketches and such things without wasting tons of sketch paper, so that's just what I did. I decided I'd start at the top, with faces!
And so, here's a whole shit load of faces. I doubt it's actually 100 exactly, but I'm too lazy to count. I did however label them as I drew them, incase anybody wanted to talk about a specific face for some reason. Also, there's a few of you folks in there, so take a good look!
Some of the pictures are done directly from references, mostly in the bottom left and top right corners. Some are done with human facial references, mostly the ones of Ru. And some are done completely from my imagination, about half the Ru ones, most of the guests and some in the bottom right corner.
I wasn't trying particularly hard to do a huge variety of expressions here, so there are plenty of repeats, but I did try to experiment a bit as I went. Mostly I just wanted to practice drawing faces. I don't know if I've improved at all, but some of the later ones were a bit faster than I think they may have otherwise been. Hard to say, but it was fun at least.
So yeah, lemme know your thoughts, folks!

I find it actually rather hard on the hand. Might just be something about the way I hold the tablet, but I had to take breaks fairly frequently. I also find it almost impossible to control, which is why these are extremely sketchy. So I was mostly going for the vague idea of the expression as opposed to a clean, detailed sketch.
Definitely won't be doing digital commissions, or even digital drawings any time soon. Nothing beyond quick messy practice doodles, it's just not as much fun.
Can't really say how it affected my speed... it may not have made a difference at all. We'll have to see what future drawings are like before I can say anything for certain.

I think if I run into that problem I'd just find a way to order online or something. Or offer sketch commissions for a while on printer paper. There's always something around to put marks on. :P As for 62... I guess that's my attempt at the "a grand piano is about to fall on my head" expression. x3 Turned out a bit too sad looking for that, though.
Get SAI, it has a stabilization feature, which takes the wiggle out of your lines.
Also, get something rigid and wider than the tablet, to rest it on. I use an unopened carton of parchment paper, cause the box is rigid, very rigid, and it's wide, so it gives me more area to rest my paws.. hands.. oxo

I have a Wacom Cintiq, which has a stand and just rests on a table. If you are having trouble with keeping lines smooth rather than shaky, you might need another program for outlines and such, one with a line smoother. Digital media always looks the best when you have the proper resources, at least in my opinion.
Indeed! When I started this, one of the things I wanted to practice was different head shapes. I'm okay with canines/felines/etc, but they farther they get from that, the more trouble I have. That's why a lot of the referenced pictures are of birds/lizards, since they tend to have rather out there shapes. Also why none of the guest faces are canines, since I can do those well enough already. :P Anyway, my point is, I started by googling 'dragons' since they also tend to have a rather large variety of shapes to them, and came across all those pictures. I planned on doing more of them, but only got the one in.
Ramble ramble ramble I'm done. x3

My first thought when he commented was "Why would I draw a cactus? That's stupid" followed shortly by "No wait, that's awesome. I'ma do it." x3 I guess I couldn't resist the comedic potential of a page full of faces with a random cactus in the middle, heh.
As for you... perhaps being reprimanded for bad behaviour? No idea. x3

really great work, for that many different faces, species and expressions! i would need that time, to do one of em (exept some of the birds maybe..)
But that are so many, i couldnt say, which one i like most. =) but Blaze is really good.. and 9, i think.. and Quietcatsaloon?.. and 19.. and Psyros... ok, lets stop this... (sorry, when i misspelled someone or something.. its a bit hard to read. ;) )

They all look great. I've always loved your skill with expression, and it's really a lot of fun to look through this whole sheet and see all the different emotions, and all the different species that you attempted. I particularly like the mix of standard furry/cartoony faces and the realistic animal ones. The birds down at the bottom left are particularly nice, especially the hawk/eagle labeled "12". And of course I love the little shot you did of my girl, goofy expression and all. Though I admit the very first thing I looked for was the cactus! Thanks so much for letting some of us get in on this, and for sharing it!
While I'm not a huge fan of realism when it comes to furry art, there's no denying that there's no better place to base a cartoony style on. It's all based on reality even if it's heavily stylized, so I try to get some life drawing sketches in here and there to help out with things.
I'm kind of surprised you like 12 though. That was the very first bird I did, and I pretty much stopped short and moved on because of how bad it was going. xD I think the few that came after it went much better, myself. But hey, I won't complain. I'm just happy to hear you liked it. Many thanks!

That solves the texture problem, but my biggest problem is simply that I'm not drawing where the marks are going. I can barely control my pencil when it's writing directly on the surface, when I'm trying to look up at the screen and draw on my lap, it just all falls apart in my brain. x3
I'm a poor judge of artwork, as I am very easy to please, however, I will say that these do look really good. Assuming that most of these were just quick sketches, and not trying really hard to be like "This HAS to be perfect!!!"
