Fursuiting has a certain dimming effect on one's senses.
My senses aren't razor sharp on the best day, so cover me
in fur, take away a good portion of my hearing and vision,
and I become a tad ineffectual in navigating the world around me.
Rambling up the pier on a sunny Sunday, I became aware of a
sudden heaviness in my right leg.
"Uh oh," I thought. "Stroke."
Upon closer examination, I discovered that my difficulty walking
was not caused by a blood clot, but rather this young man who
had anchored himself to my side.
Relieved, I patted his head, gave him the happy paws and looked
around for the camera. Surely his parents were taking pictures of
their giddy son and the giant canine.
It was then I realized that he was sobbing, and no cameras, let
alone parental units, were in evidence.
Dogs I understand. Children are a mystery to me. Worried that I
had crushed his little foot, or smacked him with my tail, I asked
him what was the matter.
"I can't find my daddy!" He said between hiccups.
"That's OK," I said. 'I'll sniff him out for you."
"Really? You promise?" He gripped me tighter and brightened a little.
"Of course! I'm a search and rescue dog. No problem."
He grinned and held my paw and I then realized that I
had better locate pops post haste or the kid would grow up
not to trust talking dogs. I couldn't have that.
We walked slowly up the pier, searching for daddy, both trying to
smile for the tourists. Little Carlos related that his papa had been
fishing, but had moved to a new spot on the rail. The kid had
walked over to look at a seagull, and somehow lost track of
his dad's position. I wagged. I was looking for a guy fishing from the
pier, and that narrowed my search to only a few hundred blokes.
Piece of cake.
"What does your daddy look like?" I asked.
"He's wearing a white t-shirt." Carlos offered.
I looked around. So were 90% of the others fishing.
Sensing that I needed more information, he thought hard for a moment.
"He fishes with squid!" He exclaimed, convinced that hunk of
knowledge would lead us to pops like no other.
We walked up and down the pier. Twice.
Carlos started to cry again, and I felt a peculiar mix of compassion,
panic and failure. What if we never found his dad? I'd have to raise
him as my own. Where would he sleep? What do kids eat?
Kids grow up so fast. How could I afford shoes and tiny fursuits
every 6 months?
Just when we were both about to dissolve into sobbing puddles,
a frantic man came running towards us, brandishing a fishing rod
and a look of profound relief. I'll never forget it.
"Mijo!" He exclaimed, scooping up the kid and hugging him so tight
I thought he might pop. They were both crying and smiling and
a flood of relief washed over me. I wouldn't have to worry about
making pint sized DTD's after all....
Carlos Sr. shook my paw vigorously and thanked me again and
again for taking the time to help his boy. He had no idea how
they became separated, but a nice lady on the end of the pier
told him that a talking dog was wandering around with a lost kiddo.
At least I was easy to spot.
As father and son resumed their day of pescatory bliss, I felt
like a very good dog. Crisis averted, I continued my stroll,
heading decidedly for the watering hole with the coldest beer.
I may not be much of a search and rescue dog, but I felt
like it at that moment.
Now to search out a bar stool and rescue a beer...

I got teary eyed reading this. I love feel good stories, and you're always over-flowing with them. <3
I'm glad that little boy found you and not some creep that would have taken him away. I don't know what I would do if I lost track of my four year old son on a crowded dock like that. That poor father.. his heart probably stopped for a few seconds when he realized his boy was missing. I can only imagine.
You're awesome. <3

That's incredibly unnecessary, and an extremely ignorant thing to say. Islam is not a violent religion at it's core, but the picture painted by American media only focuses on extremist sects and those who rigidly adhere to 2000 year-old tenets. It's the same problem that comes with fundamental Christianity, you know, the kind of Christians that burn the Qur'an, hate "fags,"firebomb abortion clinics, and commit hate crimes against those they don't agree with.
Several close friends of mine live by Islam and are some of the most level-headed people I know. They're kind, intelligent, reasonable, and the last time I checked, Patrick and Kira don't walk around with assault rifles and explosive vests.
Next time you decide to be blatantly offensive and ignorant, put some thought into bible-bashing Jesus freaks, and understand that extremism in a problem with ANY religious organization.
Please.

Sometimes my the comments on my posts get a little off track,
and I appreciate your well written response.
I'm all for freedom of speech, and folks are welcome to say what they want,
but I can always count on my friends to provide a rational, cohesive response.
I would be glad to discuss the merits of any world view, as long as all
parties are respectful.
Thank you again.

I think this is will become one of my favorite Dogbomb stories. Not because I like kids (I don't!), but because of the humor you inject in your recounting the situation. I literally laughed out loud a few times, and for that alone I want to thank you for giving my otherwise mundane Wednesday a very pleasant start! Okay, I don't like kids, but I also have a soft spot for the little guys when they're lost or in need. You are an awesome credit to our planet! :3
I lost my parents once when I was a kid in Vegas - in the Flamingo Pool Which is HUUUUUUUUUUGE
It felt horrible; I was in tears.
I went to a nearby security guard and told him I lost my parents.
The guy gave me a soda to help me calm down and walked around the pool area as we looked for my parents.
I finally saw my parents and ran to them happily.
After the celebration of finding each other again, I looked back for the security guard but he wasn't there; probably went back to his post or whatever.

Glad you were able to reunite this kid with his family. Really touching.

Like I said at FWA, these stories are one of the main reasons I love to read your submissions. This was one of your best, easily. I'm glad that everything worked out for you and the little mijo. Who knows, maybe Carlos will grow up to be a furry and make a big contribution to the fandom? All because of one huge, friendly dog that helped him find his daddy.
It's amazing how by just being in a fursuit the kid went straight to you for help. I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing! Out of the sea of people, it's you he chose to help. Of course, you're awesome, so that's all right, but no doubt the fursuit made you seem trustworthy to him.
that is so TOUCHING like..i cant even describe it.
out of a crowd of strangers, you must have seemed like the most friendliest most comforting sight there for a small child and he ran right to you..that is so sweet
little boy reunited with his dad. if ever i was to pick one man to entirely represent the furry community it would be you. you give us an astounding name.
and also the whole time i was reading this story i was thinking "oh no..nobody's gonna think he was KIDNAPPING the kid right?..or...accuse him of being a creeper in a dog suit??"
im glad the father saw the situation for what it really was

Oh my gosh Dogbomb I know how you feel, though I find lost children where i work (I work in a mall and they see shiney things and then lose their parents) so I have them sit at my cart and I call security, sometimes the parents manage to find my cart but i've got plenty of crying kids. High paw man and kudos to you for helping that little boy :3 you deserve that cold beer :3 *hands you one*

Thank you! Compared to others and the past few years, I am on an easier road!!!
That and the Mini-golf last Saturday outdid this so I'm feeling grand!!! That was so cool of a friend of mine taking me to the mini-golf event and then playing min-golf in fursuit with a large number of families there was incredible! I love our fandom!

Dogbomb, you are the greatest person (dog actually!) ever! I wish more people in the world strived t be like you.
When I was a little kid I got into all sorts of trouble and never once was there a stranger willing to help me find my way back, much less a talking dog. I still think back on it and shudder with a little fear at what could have happened, and how scared I was, but little Carlos here will look back on his experience and remember he spent the whole day running around with a giant pooch. That's pretty amazing.

"That's OK," I said. 'I'll sniff him out for you." You stayed so calm and collected throughout the entire time, at least externally <3. You're that boy's hero and you are to a lot of others in the community. I'm sure I can speak for everyone by saying we love hearing your heart warming adventures :3 Keep being awesome and inspirational!
That was adorable. I hate to read because it takes too long for me, but the way you told your story really sucked me in and had me frantically reading each word right to the end. It was so great of you to personally find that little boy's daddy, rather than turn him over to security. :)
*waggwagg* A herodog like you needs a medal and a hat stating what you are! Awesome pics and fantastic story! I am glad you reunited a boy and his father. In 10 years time I am sure we will find out that he has become a furry himself! You have planted the seed! Kids mystify me too! What *do* they eat?? We should discuss this further at AC over some marflebeer!
I think kids eat kashi and light bulbs and centipedes, but I could be wrong.
Good thing we're doggie daddies instead. I KNOW what Rud and Magnolia eat 'cause
it has pictures of dogs right on the bag.
Thank you for making my morning brighter. I look forward
to AC and the continuation of these discussion threads.

Boss, next time I see you we need to get a beer. I didn't get nearly enough time to talk with you while you walked through the lobby at FC 2012 (I was the one taking the picture of Duncan and the awestruck/fear of God having flight attendant). You seem seriously awesome and I'd love to get to know you.
There was a couple of times I got separated from my parents when I was younger and I wish I could have had a rescue dog like you around! You did a wonderful thing for that little boy! Awesome story! Maybe you should look into becoming a rescue dog! :) You're a wonderful person and a wonderful Dog! :))
Hehe :) It's good to know that there's a lot of people in the fandom who likes to give positivity to everyone! Sadly, there's a negative part of the fandom, but i believe the positive part beats by far the negative part :) I want to be this kind of person, who gives positivity and help other furries in the fandom :3
