He looms, that's his thing- His presence would probably be outright ruined in a scene with direct sunlight for example, whereas Frond actually makes a good image against a sunny backdrop despite his nature. Presumably this is because red and black together make such an absolute value of intensity; Maybe purple or dark blue could work with such a form but that's about it.
