I subscribe to a newspaper called Old News (http://www.oldnewspublishing.com/), which is like a regular newspaper, only it reports on past events. Perfect for a History-phile like me. :3 I decided to type up the stories for my fellow historians to enjoy.

Butler should be thanked for the steps he took to harbour freed slaves and keep them out of reach of their former masters. He was, however, quite the buffoon and incompetent when it came to military affairs, and could be blamed for causing the war to last several months longer than it could have, what with his fiasco at Bermuda Hundred....
I notice the article does not mention Butler's practice of selling slaves back into slavery through his brother in law in Missouri.
That was the actual reason he set the legal precedent of escaped slaves as "contraband of war"...Which made their confiscation and reselling legal.
Nor does it mention his term as military governor of New Orleans, where he issued a proclamation that any woman in the city that did not "treat his men with proper respect would be regarded as a woman of the town and taken".
Meaning he legitimized the rape of any woman who did not choose to socialize with his soldiers, as "woman of the town" meant prostitute.
