AnthroCon 2005’s theme was "Heroes". While the word 'hero' tends to call to mind those in uniforms or part of some civic organization, it applies equally to those everywhere who stand up for others because it is the right thing to do. Others such as big brothers who will not tolerate the abuse or bullying of their little brothers.
The line 'He hath loosed the fateful lightening of His terrible swift sword” is from the Battle Hymn of the Republic, a song that give me goosebumps whenever I hear sung. The line pretty well captures the mood and determination of this particular big brother. He is going to visit some "righteous wraith" on some neighborhood baddies and see that this never ever happens again.

I am so happy to see that the emotions that I wanted to get across with this picture succeeded.
Being a big brother/sister is an awesome responsibility (even though you sometimes want to kill your younger brother/sister) .
For a lot of kids, their first experience with a real-life super-hero is their big brother or sister.

Hmmmm, there was one incident in my early life that I can remember to this day, so I imagine that makes it a traumatic experience. But *shrug* it’s experiences like that that makes one a “lion” in later life who protects the members of his pride and the occasional picked-on-cub he might come across.
We can all be a big brother or big sister sometime for someone who needs one.

The really strikes me. Being an older brother, I can really relate to what is portrayed in this picture. It makes me think about those times I have lost my temper on my younger siblings, to have them think of me like that... it's really a touching thought. On a lighter, funnier hand that is EXACTLY, PICTURE-PERFECT of what I would do cause (a) I love my siblings no matter what and (b) because I wear a lot of dress shirts like that and I would probably be putting the sleeve up because I just have to do it normally but then again wouldn't want to mess up the sleeves no would we? Back to the point, that is a touching picture and I love the way it was interpreted.
Receiving a comment like yours, Wolf, really makes the hours I put into a picture all worth while for me, especially when it echoes something in in the commenter’s real life. Thank you for sharing it.
Growing up in a world where there is a big brother in it … well it’s sorta nice to have that big lumbering hulk around when you know he’ll be there when you need someone on your side.
Being a big brother is a stressful position. The little “termites” have no respect for you, get into your stuff, rat on you to Mom & Dad, and can never keep their mouths shut. Being the oldest means that you never had the chance to do all of that brat stuff to an older brother. Life is so unfair. :-D
Being an older brother gives you the opportunity to learn & teach patience, be able to provide guidance, and find out your younger siblings’ secrets, and let them know that you know, but will never tell Mom or Dad.
In later years those siblings will always refer to you as “my favorite brother” -- and mean it.

No really, it wasn’t me who made that spelling mistake it was … is was … it was my keyboard! Yeah, that’s it -- my keyboard can’t spell worth a bean!
Happy to know that my art occasionally is on target, Let. Sometimes it’s the simple truths that make for the best pictures.

As to my efforts at portraying emotion in my work; the artist is a performer and the viewer is his/her audience. The "performanace" consists of getting across certain feelings or emotions in a picture for the viewer to react to and experience. All the rest is sign painting.

Holy cow! You did it again! I so love these artworks and wish I had the money to buy them from you! I so dearly love the designs!
On the subject: I'm glad you picked it. I was bullied a lot as a kid and even online there has been some but not as bad as online bullying of some furry friends of mine.

Being a lone kid in a bad neighborhood, or a small kid, or the fat kid, or the kid who wears glasses, or a kid who for some reason totally beyond his control gets bullied sucks. (Sorry for the crude language)
Bullies, even when they are bigger than the kids they pick on are still COWARDS and the size and age of those they victimize proves it.
Sometimes all it takes to be a “big brother” is to become a friend of the lone kid in the bad neighborhood, the small or fat or “four-eyed” kid and just let him know that he’s really okay as a person and what he is interested in is worth listening to. Being a big brother is not always a matter of fists and muscles.

"Go get em' bro" That's what came to mind when I saw this. As for the art it's self very nice work! I can really she the story behind this as the expressions and actions relay cause and effect quite well. Again, excellent work! It's nice to see some new art from you.

Thanks very much, Raithwal!
A furry artist once described me as a “story artist”, which over the years I realize is true. I like to tell stories with my art, stories that resonate with my viewers -- bringing up a memory or maybe giving them something new to think about, or maybe just giving them a graphic “doorway” through which they can briefly enter into a magical imagined world of wonder and happiness and warm friends. Heh, I like being there myself for the hours it takes me to create those pictures.
As to my absence, well I’m working on a large art project that I hope to have completed and posted here by the end of May (secret).

I have an older brother, but he was more the bully than the defender to me lol. I grew up ostracized about anything and everything from anyone and everyone. I think I made it out stronger than I ever could have imagined.
This is a wonderful piece. Such emotion that conveys the true love of brotherhood.

It isn’t the gentleness of the blacksmith’s hammer that forges the toughest steel, Weasel. Though I am sure there was a much better and gentler way for you to grow up to be the person you have become without that bullying.
Your older brother, for his part, missed out on something that could have meant a lot to him then and more now and in the future even more by skipping that “tough guy” role.
*furry hug*

I wish I had a brother like that was my "hero" who was near me in the best and the worst ... that when my legs falter he immediately got his hands to protect her ... they laugh with me moments of humorous, cry with me in sorrow but also stop my tears and help me rebuild myself and continue my life ... he was my "Lion" noble and courageous ... our fathers ... mothers ... brothers ... sisters ... they are true, and only "heroes" of our lives ...
Well and truly said, KaiserLeomon.
For those who did not have a big brother or big sister to help through the tough moments, to be there to share the silly jokes, to prove that there really wasn’t a monster under the bed, knowing that emptiness should give us the motivation to be a big brother or big sister for someone else. For truly, what we do not have we can become.

It’s probably heresy to say it around here, Swamp, what with everyone supposed to be furry and all that, but there’s nothing wrong with wearing your heart on your sleeve occasionally -- it’s the human thing to do. There’s quite enough uncaring, unfeeling clods in the world as it is.

Well Ol’ Man Reality is out there waiting to eventually dump a hot load of steaming Reality on each of us as His way of saying “Welcome to the Real World”.
It’s really for our parents and our teachers, who supposedly have already made the transition from Sheltered Child to Dependable Adult to provide that sheltering to others, to provide us with good examples of how to do that and to be trusted role models.

She sings a song called "Holding Out for a Hero." Here it is.

So obviously, I had the wrong song. I thought it was called "I Need a Hero."

As angry as that expression is, it's still heartwarming to see the big guy protecting his little bro.
As for the unseen bullies, I can only hope he doesn't thrash them too hard; while I'm all in favor of just punishment, there's no point in teaching someone a lesson if they don't survive long enough to learn it.

This was closer to what I had in mind when I was creating this picture, Leo.
