Saurians are a race of intelligent, humanoid, lizard-like people who inhabit mostly the continent to the south, most notably the Jungle of Crosx, Ra'Alian, Salfaay and Karesh. They do however venture further north quite frequently and can be found in small numbers throughout nearly all of the Westlands and it's various nations. On average the reptile-like species stands about as tall as your average man and have roughly the same stature save for the fact they stand and walk on their toes and posses large tails. From the back of their elongated heads grow a set of horns, those on the males of the species growing much longer and gnarled in appearance then the females', and in most cases they posses a thick hide of scaled plates that cover their shoulders and run down their back as a form of mild natural armor.
As with most other peoples the Saurians incorporate a number of varied races , three of which are especially notable.
Korak: These Saurians are the tallest of their kindred and also are by far the most numerous, with a population that dwarfs that of the other races even combined. The Korak are believed to be those that most closely resemble the ancient ancestors of all Saurians. Their skin is green in hue, tending towards yellow-greens and olive. The scales on their backs are thick enough to protect without limiting flexibility to any real degree. The Korak also have the most variety in their appearance, as is to be expected since there are far more of them who exist in a wider range of climates... however they do originate from the dense jungles and deep forests such as Krosx, which houses the Saurian largest city of Atca.
Tunkar: The Tunkar are shorter then the Korak though wider in stature and more solid in build. Hailing from the harsh deserts of Salfaay and Karesh the Tunkar are a mostly nomadic people and their scales are in hues of brown and red to match the dust and desert sands. The scales lining their backs are much thicker than those of any other race of Saurian, hard plates that protect well even against sharp blades, though in exchange the Tunkar do tend to be slower on their feet. It is also pertinent to note that they have much shorter yet thicker tails, and it is believed this helps them to store excess energy or water in the tissues therein to help sustain them though the long desert droughts.
Iknih: Shorter then most and more slender the Iknih are the fewest in number of the major Saurian races. Making their homes mostly on the coasts, near swamps or in vast wetlands the Iknih have scales coloured far more blue then others. THey also do not posses the same hard scales of the others and in place have plumes of colourful blue feathers while their tails are quite long and very thin and nimble.
Saurian biology is a curious thing. They are not true reptiles as it would appear at first glance, though neither are they simply scaled mammals or avians, but rather some sort of mix, possibly a remnant from when the groups split or perhaps just adapting similar features slowly over time alongside other species. What separates them most from being classified as simply reptile is that they breastfeed their young. A standard clutch of Saurian eggs will often count between three to four eggs from which about half will properly hatch, making one of two young per clutch the standard. When first hatched young Saurian children have no teeth, making them unable to take solid food and necessitating this peculiar adaptation.
Secondly, Saurians are not cold blooded. Like all mammals they are a warm blooded species, though they heat themselves somewhat less effectively them most and therefore instilling in them a preference for a warmer climate. This same fact, however, allows Saurians to live in much colder places then any reptiles of their size should be able to, even if it can be largely uncomfortable for them.
I'll add more to that if I think of anything. Also, I'm sure there are about a billion and a half spelling mistakes and typos there, so place let me know and I'll try to fix them.
No this isn't censored, Saurian males simply have internal testes and both male and female Saurians have no real visible external sex organs if they aren't in an aroused state, all you would see is a slight split in their scales.
This is something I've been thinking of coming up with for a while now, sort of a bestiary of Saurians just to nail down a few of the details of their various races and their biology... but I'm not sure this turned out great. Right now it's barely more then flat shaded sketchy line-work, but I may try to add in a bit more variety, especially to their faces and proportions of their builds, and then paint it up properly. I very well may still play around with the colour of the Tunkar and the Iknih until I'm happier with them.
As always, please leave a comment and let me know what you think or if you have any questions, comments of criticisms... especially if you have criticisms, so that I can know what's on your guys minds or if you have any ideas that are just generally cool.
