Rough concept art for a species of alien insect that I came up with. I thought up the following info as I drew it. Still no name for them, any suggestions would be sweet!
---
This race is a sentient race of insect. They have an outer carapace much like that of many other insects, but they actually do not use it for structural support anymore. The carapaces can be any color, however they are duller, less saturated versions of those colors. Some of them (like the one viewed above) have slightly iridescent carapaces. They often paint brighter tribal markings on themselves. They have a light, hollow bone structure much like that of a bird, and the carapace, while looking impressive, is actually rather flimsy for the most part. The piece on the head and the first two on the shoulder can take many hits, and the rest does offer some protection, but they still use armor. The plating on their hands is very very soft and flexible, giving them a slight sense of touch. They have a total of three toes on each foot and five fingers (including the thumb) on each hand. The large form of their tail, while looking heavy, is actually hollow as well, but still very strong. Their tails are strong enough to lift their own body weight, and they often use that to meditate. The average height is about 8', and the average weight is about 170 lbs. Their light weight comes as a surprise to most people, but that is due to their light carapaces and hollow bones. They appear to have 2 sets of eyes, but they really only have one. The second set of holes are ear holes. They have no sense of smell, despite having nose holes as well. The antennae on their head can sense vibrations in the air, but only a little.
Their mandibles, while not really used any more, can actually move and the clicking made from their movement is a part of their coded language. They can speak regularly as well, and use that form of speech to talk to other races, but the ancient language that uses their mandibles is a close secret, and no one has yet to crack their codes.
They are master weapon-smiths, and even after they become a space-fairing race, their ancient designs are still used and integrated into modern weapons.
While they look like a fighting species, and they do fight between tribes, they have very few actual wars between themselves. They view battle as an honorable occurrence, but they do not kill one another unless it is necessary. Back when they had tribes, whenever a battle occurred between two of them, the winner would host a feast and invite the loosing tribe. The looser would usually bring gifts of food and rare materials as a congratulations to the other tribe.
When it comes to reproduction, they are actually an asexual race. They only mate when it is necessary, and while there are males and females, the only difference is that females have slightly smaller mandibles. They lay up to 5 small eggs at one time, and children are raised by the whole tribe.
