If there's one thing this merc hates more than rain, it's snow.

I've always pondered how well the aliens in MassEffect deal with temp differences.
I mean, we have warm blood and fur, but animals like reptiles can't last long in colder environments. Who's to say Drell or Salarians or any species in the game can even survive in colder weather?
None of them have fur come to think of it... Hell humans seem like the only species in that game that has fur/hair.
Such a overlooked quality in that game. :I

I guess the answer is always 'SCIENCE!' when it comes to scifi stories.
The simple fact all of these species breath oxygen based air to start with is crazy in itself. Like 'what are the odds' crazy. Like landing on a distance planet millions of light years away and finding it they have a humanoid lifeforms that not only looks human, but also has a culture spot on our own, down to the stupid internet memes we have. Because when you get down to it, Life finds a way no matter what. And sometimes that 'No Matter What' involves evolving on a planet that does not have a oxygen environment. I mean we have what? Nine planets in our solar system? And how many moons? Now how many of those moons and planets have an oxygen based atmospheric?
ONE.
I've always had this same problem with the aliens from Start Trek. I know they tried to push it off on that one episode in TNG that all sentient species were descendants of one humanoid race, but really? What are the odds? On every planet? Even fallowing a genetic blueprint, it only takes one G or A in the wrong spot out of the millions of billions and trillions of lines of code to make someone have three legs or scales.

Do note before you judge all that you see, given that the game also states it acknowledges a much larger number of races never even seen, let alone known to be living plain and fine amidst the main races. And while yes, aliens are alien by being different, and it is safe to assume many will breathe different atmospheres, and possibly even exist in comparable extremes of environment and temperature. But do further note that it's easier to work with life as the human species, and its sciences know life. Additionally, the designers wanted a variety of races while still being able to consistently keep the game in a story-telling setting. Some rules and story license are needed for works that want to accomplish this. The original designers are knowledgeable of biology, and even explain flat out in the game why the races (mostly) have different colours and consistencies of blood.
And inherently, sci-fi authors are both lazy and lacking in knowledge of scale and distance. It can't be helped.
If you want alien aliens, go look at all the pretty pictures and read about stuff on Abiogenisis' DeviantArt page.
(Star Trek aliens suck, unless we're talking about tribbles or that man-ina-rubber-lizard-suit that Kirk fights with an obviously-styrofoam-rock.)

Wut? Like this?
Even the more hardcore trek fan looks at crap like that and laughs. We all laugh. It's the story man. You got to look past the bad acting. They had a very low budget, you know?
I remember reading a book a long time ago called Stinger, in which the aliens described were very out of this world. I liked that book. Very good alien depictions.

*hands you a Stanislav Lem book*
Here, aliens that humans simply cannot ever communicate with, proving that we will be Forever Alone even if we aren't technically the only intelligent life in the universe.
Also, the Volus don't breathe oxygen and the Hanar are fucking jellyfish that float around in mass effect suspension fields.
