I commissioned this piece from Tammi-Sempai on DA to illustrate the first meeting between my favorite OCs, Hazel and Amaranth.
Amaranth sat at the desk, bored out of his mind. He hated waiting with a burning passion, and it seemed like that was all he was doing lately. Sure, he and Maru needed a new office manager, but why did HE have to be the one to wait for people to show up for interviews? And why did the damned cat insist that Ama wear a suit while he got to dress comfortably? The moth sighed as his stomach growled loudly and picked up the phone. If he was going to be stuck in the office all day, he was going to get some Chinese food out of it.
*******
Hazel stopped outside of a nondescript building, looking up at the sign to confirm that he was at the right place. "Fujihara Security. This is the place." He straightened his tie and jacket, taking a deep, calming breath. Hazel desperately needed this job: he'd been eating nothing but ramen for weeks and had finally run out of both ramen and money. He quickly double checked to make sure he'd brought his most up-to-date resume. After a second deep breath, he opened the door and stepped into the surprisingly large, well decorated office. His eyes adjusted quickly as he scanned the room, taking in everything: the lovely plants, the inviting chairs, the handsome man sitting at the desk.
*******
The door opened and Amaranth looked up, almost dropping the phone from the beauty of the man standing before him. There was something about the serious look in the other's eyes, the way he carried himself, that made Amaranth's heart skip a beat before leaping up into his throat. All thoughts of Chinese takeout were banished from his mind as the rabbit walked toward him, all thought was swept from his mind in fact. He snapped out of his daze when he realized the beauty was speaking to him. Amaranth hung up the phone quickly, trying to cover his momentary lapse so he wouldn't look like a bumbling fool.
"Wh- How can I help you?" Amaranth managed, trying desperately to regain his composure. He didn't understand why the man standing on the other side of the desk had such a powerful effect on him- he was no longer an inexperienced teen ruled by raging hormones, but that's how he felt when those gorgeous golden eyes met his.
Hazel, however, was oblivious to the moth's struggles, and was all business. "My name is Hazel Larkin. I'm here to interview for the office manager position. Mr. Fujihara is expecting me."
Amaranth swallowed hard, and stood. "I'll let Maru know you're here." He quickly went back to Maru's office, not even bothering to knock.
Maru glanced up from the screen, the blue glow illuminating his handsome face. "Just wear the suit, Ama, it won't kill you to stick it out for a few more days."
Shaking his head, Amaranth walked over to the desk where the cat was stretched out in front of his bank of screens. "Someone's here to interview for the job. We have to hire him," he whispered. "He's the hottest thing I've ever seen, and if you don't hire him, I will never forgive you."
Maru arched his eyebrow, gracefully swinging his feet to the floor, his tail twitching with amusement. "You want me to hire someone just so you can what? Get laid? Ogle him? Sorry, dude, I love you like a brother, but I am not dragging my family name through a sexual harassment scandal."
"I'll behave, I swear. Just, please, give him a chance," the smaller man practically begged.
Maru's eyes narrowed as his look at old friend. "Are you really that taken by him? I've never seen you act like this before."
Amaranth ran his fingers through his shaggy hair, shaking his head slightly. "There's just something about him... I don't know." He chuckled nervously. "I'm acting crazy, aren't I?"
"Yeah, you are." Maru sighed, putting his hand on his friend's shoulder. "Send him in. He's the only applicant we've had, so if he's qualified, we'll hire him."
As Amaranth practically danced out of his office, Maru shook his head. He hoped for the sake of his sanity that the guy applying for the job was qualified- he had a feeling that if he wasn't Ama was going to be impossible to work with.
*******
Amaranth managed to compose himself before he reached the front office, but his heart fluttered when he saw Hazel again. In his best Professional Voice he said, "Maru, I mean Mr. Fujihara is ready for you. Please, follow me."
After leading Hazel to Maru's office and making the introductions, Amaranth went back to the front desk. All thoughts of lunch had disappeared until his stomach growled at him a few minutes later. "I'll wait," he thought. "Maybe if he gets the job, he'll want to celebrate and go to lunch with me. But what if he says no? Oh, gods that would suck! No, no, just keep calm. Ask him as a coworker, there's no pressure there. Yeah, just a friendly 'Welcome' lunch. That's a good idea." Amaranth smiled to himself. Today was turning out to be a very good day.
After almost an hour, Hazel and Maru came out of the back, both with smiles on their faces. "Welcome our new office manager, Amaranth. Show him around, make him feel at home." He turned and shook Hazel's hand. "Feel free to let Amaranth know if you have any questions or need anything. I'll be in the back working, but if you guys need anything just holler." With that he went back to his private office, leaving the two pink-haired men alone.
Amaranth went to Hazel, smiling warmly. "Congratulations. Maru can be kind of hard to impress, do the interview must've gone really well. Oh! I haven't introduced myself. Like Maru said, I'm Amaranth. Just let me know if you need anything, anything at all."
"Thank you," Hazel said, his voice soft. "If you'd be so kind as to show me to my desk, I'd really appreciate it."
"Of course, just over here." Amaranth led him to the front desk. "This is your desk. The computer has a custom holo interface- Maru built it himself. All of our client files, contacts, and so on can be accessed here." He looked over at Hazel, the question on his lips forgotten as he saw the blank expression on the other man's face. The rabbit began to sway, his face pale. Amaranth moved quickly, catching him up in his arms before Hazel's legs gave out. "Are you all right?" his concern evident in his voice as he helped him sit.
Hazel shook his head, trying to clear away the sudden faintness. "I'm sorry. I just got a little lightheaded there for a second." His stomach suddenly let out a loud, grumbly gurgle.
From his closer vantage point, and the fact that he'd just had Hazel in his arms, he noticed how light and thin he was. His brow furrowed with concern, he gently asked, "How long has it been since you've had a decent meal?"
Hazel looked away, intimidated by the genuine concern in Amaranth's eyes. "A while." Though he was ashamed of his weakness, he found it impossible to lie to someone showing him such kindness, even if they had only just met.
Amaranth frowned. "Well, that just won't do." He stood. "Please, join me for lunch, my treat." When Hazel began to protest, Amaranth raised one hand, stopping him. "I insist. There's a great restaurant not far from here. It's owned by Maru's sister, the food's good, it's comfortable."
Hazel smiled shyly and nodded. "Ok. Thank you. It... It means a lot."
Amaranth returned the smile and helped him stand. This wasn't an ideal way to have a meal with this handsome man, but he took it as a sign that maybe this was meant to be. He tapped a few buttons on the computer, letting Maru know he and Hazel were going to lunch. And to not worry if they were gone for a while- he'd explain later.
*******
The pair spent quite a while talking and eating, and when they were done,
Hazel felt better than he had in a long time. Having a real meal of actual meats and vegetables had done wonders for both his mood and his body. And eating that meal with such pleasant company had made it even better. Things were starting to look up, even if he was confused and a little afraid of the feelings he had toward Amaranth. He had so little experience with things like this. He spent the time before he went to bed for the night thinking about how much things had changed in just a day. He'd gotten a great job, made a couple of friends, Amaranth and the nice girl at the restaurant, Tsukiko, and gotten some food in his belly. As he lay back and waited for sleep to claim him, he pondered his feelings for Amaranth. Surely he was just confusing his concern for something more. Hazel was a level-headed man: he didn't believe in anything as silly as "love at first sight." That stuff was just in movies and bad fiction- it wasn't real. And even if it was, there was no way someone like Amaranth would be attracted to him. He was just concerned about another person's well being. Sure, that's what it was, that's what it had to be. It had just been so long since anyone had showed him any kindness that it seemed like more than it was, that's all. Still, it felt good to have someone treat him kindly. Smiling, he drifted off into the most peaceful sleep he'd had in years, dreaming of a certain handsome moth's face.
