As was pointed out earlier, these are Final Fantasy characters. The weapons are a long way from realistic. The thing you are probably referring to as a sword is actually a lance and extremely front-heavy. The only thing more cumbersome is the helmet that character is wearing. But then, I don't think the "Dragoon" is human, so perhaps he is strong enough to handle it.
Lance? The thing held by the character third from the left is obviously a lance or standard of some sort -- I could have guessed a standard, and no more useful in battle than a legion's eagle or labrum. I mean whatever is held by the unfinished character on the far left. It looks to be a machete about 18 inches long,, but the sides square and straight.
If you're talking about the Elementalist (Bunny girl), I believe that is a mage-staff. Why there's a flag on it, I don't know.
These characters are of Japanese design and the Japanese are infamous for costume elements that don't make a lot of sense. A look at any villain in the Power Ranges live-action show, for example: Over-large shoulder guards, spikes and horns in unlikely places, drapes that are easy to trip over, hair-styles that would do credit to a punker on psychedelic drugs... You get the idea.
I have no write-up on these characters. Just pics So I have have no history. I don't even know how they relate to one another. And the costumes are fairly elaborate, so this ends up looking like a class photo ...until I add the final element. Then it should get more interesting.

I try not to look at Japanese design anymore. It seemed interesting once... over 25 years ago. And it's just been getting sillier all the time. And even in 1985 I was revolted by the Power Rangers. It was obviously like those non-speaking European cartoons. You hire people in masks and dub over their voices so you can show the same program in as many countries as possible. When one of the actors gets too old for the part, asks for $5 raise, or just plain gets tired of the goofy job he's in, you hire someone else. It doesn't matter who. But what really got me were the stupid pseudo-fascist salutes and emphasis on collective action. Of course, the next 20 years of North American youth culture followed that route, with Crips and posses and a general anxiety to belong to some kind of group, any group... even if you have to sell you grandmother to get in.
I stayed interested in Miyazaki and the more intelligent anime, but the other stuff? Nertz.
