The USS Victory Email Role-Playing Game was something started by and run by a friend of mine - and it lasted a couple of years in the late 90's.
The concept was fairly simple: get a buncha folks to participate ineffectively, a creative collaborative writing exercise under the guise of it being a Role Playing Game, without the need for a board or dice. And the fact that it was based on (MOSTLY) cannon Star Trek tech was a help 'cause we could extrapolate on how some new weapons might be crafted.
In the following scene, the Galaxy Class USS Victory was out trying to recover a derelict Federation ship from Chief Skeksis' questionable and very shady past. Unfortunately a close pass by the Klingons has made everyone a bit jumpy; expecting the patrol to come back around to find out just what is so fascinating about the asteroids the Victory is investigating.
My Character, Acting Assistant Chief Engineer Cijimi (s'JIMMY') 'Smith' (a Felinzi) is trying to direct the bedlam in Engineering while the Galaxy Class USS Victory is suddenly taking a pounding... from a highly unlikely enemy.
--the solution, it would seem, is just as unexpected as the enemy outside.

I would have loved playing in that... I've had three Trek RPG characters, two Klingons and an Andorian.. my Andorian got framed by our Vulcan[Romulan] Captain... didn't like that game as I had proof that the Captain commited treason an was ignored.
my two klingons, one was a Captain an the other was a Priestess of Kayless

Interesting....
Actually, there was another voyage where Chief Skeksis & Engineer Blackmoore were on trial for maybe manipulating the computer core to help him steal something (ship? I forgot) and Cijimi basically damned-near froze himself to death trying to prove they didn't do it.
(BTW - it's great to see guys come up with novel ways to hand-to-hand the Borg: Shotguns at point-blank, anyone?)
