Hmm, you could instead of having a band with a red cross on it, instead have the cape white with a big red cross emblazoned on it for you, but... you'd probably look more like a templar knight, or a paladin, than some mage. :P
So, it's better to keep it black I think, looks cool, and you're very hard to spot in dark places. ;)
