Yea I feel ya, I think I used sai when I did this, cant recall if that was it or not was so long ago. I found when I do skin colors for some reason i can't get them dark enough, like with my recent pic with the mithra in it, I had to take it back into phootoshop and mess around with the settings to make it look more natural :P
That's what I always did, it's only been recent I have been trying to do it all on the same layer. It's kinda like painting at times, and I'm deff still getting the hang of it. It's a bit frustrating, and I facepalm a lot lol but I think it'll pay off in the end once I do a bit of trial and error :P
yeah, it can be difficult. You'll probably just have to work on continuously building the shadows up until they're dark enough, or you could try going from dark to light. Some artists I know start with the shadows and add the light, I don't know if that will make it easier but it's worth a shot.
