And now for the next round of Skullgirl cosplay, this time with the theme of the characters that play "mind games" with their enemies XP Or more specifically, the two that center around using weapons on their head to fight, Cerebella and Filia.
Although ironically, even though I'm cosplaying as Cerebella, I can very easily say that out of all the playable characters she is my least liked character, and may even border into flat out hatred of her because of her story mode. For those that don't want to hear spoilers you can stop now and I hope you enjoyed the art, otherwise read on XD
*spoiler alert*
*For people that like Cerebella and/or her story good for you, but these are my own personal opinions on the matter*
First off, as far as stories go most of them can be considered bittersweet. They either end up turning into the next Skullgirl in order to save a loved one, or you get it set up so that you know they'll soon crush their enemies with a vengeance. However, the most beautiful ending is Ms. Fortune's, in which her goal was to use the Skullgirl to revive her killed family, yet in the end she decided that it would be wrong to revive them and decides to go on with her life, destroying the Skull Heart and not making a wish...well at least till she learns that the mafia kidnapped her new family and she goes off to save them (best possible video game spin off option too :D)
Now that that's out of the way, in Cerebella's story mode, Ms. Fortune is completely changed into a monster flat out looking for blood and the utter destruction of the Mafia that killed her family. Instead of wanting to bring her family back, she's out for revenge, against the family that essentially raised Cerebella since she was a kid. As one could imagine, Cerebella sees Vitale Medici, the head of the mafia, as her father figure...or someone she's in love with...it's kind of hard to tell. It almost looks like they changed Ms. Fortune's personality last second in this story, since otherwise Cerebella would look like an even greater monster then she already is.
Anyhow, Cerebella isn't even connected with the Skullgirls story at all and instead is sent after Ms. Fortune to retrieve the life gem Ms. Fortune took. However, at the end of her story, Cerebella is able to grab hold of Ms. Fortune, and upon hearing that she plans to destroy the mafia........CRUSHES Ms. Fortune until she's been turned into a new life gem! You heard me, Cerebella literally crushes the life out of Ms. Fortune and turns her into a gem, either killing her or trapping her into a hellish life as a gem for the rest of eternity. To me, this was just cruel, disturbing, disgusting, mean spirited and just horrible.
What's even worse is how the story tries to cram into our face how "pure" Cerebella is, even though she works for one of the worst humans alive and brutally crushes Ms. Fortune into a gem. I mean holy crap what were these guys thinking when they thought up this story ending?! It's literally an ending where nobody that matters is happy at the end, with Cerebella herself looking guilty and unhappy at the end, even with Vitale now immortal. She didn't even sacrifice anything to get this ending...she just brutally destroys Ms. Fortune and ignores the Skullgirl story entirely in the end...Things get even more depressing when you think of Ms. Fortunes's story and what decision she makes in the end and the people that rely on her...In general, out of all the endings this is the crappiest and most depressing of the bunch...a pure standout in awfulness.
I know all of the stories are kind of like alternate realities or different possible futures so that one doesn't interact with another at all, and none are considered canon, but we were told that all the futures converge into one event in the future. All I can say is that I hope this story ending gets forgotten in time or even changed entirely if the game gets a sequel or expands further...cause Cerebella and her story mode stands out to me as the most utter fail of the entire game. It was just plain horrible and after watching it, I was even tempted to forget about this game entirely and do something else since it had just put me off so badly to Skullgirls in general.
So yeah, sorry for the long rant but a video game has never pissed me off so badly in a while until I saw Cerebella's ending and I just had to get it off my chest ^^;
Feel free to comment ^^

These cosplay artwork are simply the best GB, the way you integrate your characters with the skill girls really speak volume on your level of creativity. I just love seeing fine fight art like this, and yeah cerabella must have gotten the short straw when it was time to give her story arc, I don't like how she is so playful and childish in the game and yet a cold blooded killer in the story mode. Though, I must admit Vivy still looks incredible with her version of Samson on her head. So fantastic artwork as usual GB.XD
I looked up the story mode for Cerebella up on youtube. To me, it didn't seem like she was a monster, so much as her temper got the better of her in a high pressure situation. And if you look at the part where she's with Vitale at the end, it seemed like she regretted what she did Miss Fortune. Also, there was only one mention of her being 'pure', and it's worth noting that it was the skullgirl herself who said it. She might have meant relatively, compared to either herself or the Medicis. Finally, the only thing it looks like they changed about Miss Fortune is making her slightly more aggressive, and that could be due to the fact that a member of the Medici family was threatening her when she had (seemingly) easy access to the skull heart.
On a different note, I bet you wish you actually had a hat like that. It would make things much easier for you when your head is detached.

I've seen her story. And it really does seem like the only difference between the two versions of her, is the way she acted right at the end. Up until that point, she seems like her usual self. And like I said, She was being threatened by someone who was a member of the Medici family, one who had already trounced her in this version of events, in the same room as the skull heart. Cerebella could literally have reached out and grabbed it with one of her normal arms, and Miss fortune had no way of knowing that she wasn't interested in it at the moment. She might have panicked and tried to grab it before Cerebella had the chance.
And you didn't say what your thoughts were on owning a hat like Cerebella's, regardless of what you actually think of her.
And you didn't say what your thoughts were on owning a hat like Cerebella's, regardless of what you actually think of her.
In MF story she wants to revive her family and ignore the mafia, in Cerebella's story she wants to stop at nothing to destroy the mafia and doesn't mention reviving her family at all T_T
And sorry but aaaawe poor Cerebella felt guilty for crushing another human being into a jewel and bringing eternal evil to the world? poooooor baby D: *extreme sarcasm* She by far does ones of the worst things in the entire game, is the only one that kills a main character during any of the stories, and I simply feel no pity for her and only feel sorry for the hell that is Ms. Fortune's life now in her story (if she's even still alive in that thing).
Worst..................Ending.....................Ever! And I hope it stays none cannon and is never mentioned again if the game expands further.
But yeah, I wouldn't mind a hat like that <,<

Actually, when Cerebella first confronts her, she does say she's going to use it to revive the Fishbone Gang. And I didn't say I felt sorry for Cerebella, just that she regretted her actions. Also, as far as I know, she did not use the skull heart, since she said she was going to present it to Vitale. Although I suppose giving it to the mafia isn't really much better than using it herself, but it is just a little bit.
There's just too much wrong with Cerebella and her story to have any sympathy for her, what with her being forced as so pure and MF being shown as a monster just to make her look better....the ultimate Mary Sue....a character that does evil yet is so "pure and good" <,< What the crap...
It didn't say she was pure, just that she was inherently good. Good people are perfectly capable of doing horrible things. As for a good guy Nazi, isn't that what Parasoul is? Seriously, take a good look at the uniforms of the Egrets. They're pretty clearly a case of 'Putting on the Reich'. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.p.....tingOnTheReich They're even listed on that page!
Actually, from what I read, it sounded like the Canopy Kingdom was headed down the road that lead to Nazism. Plus, in Parasoul's ending, she makes a wish on the skull heart. If it acts subtly this time rather than trying to cause a whole lot of damage with just one person (which I admit it has no reason to do) it might try to nudge her into leading her nation along that path, rather than going on a rampage (at least, at first).
Also, the story part of her story mode is only eleven minutes long. Not a whole lot of time to build up a character. All of the ones I've seen so far are pretty flat actually. And I didn't get the impression that they were trying to make her tragic, just really clueless.
(Sorry, I think I replied to the wrong post.)

Parasoul sacrificed herself to keep her sister from becoming the next Skullgirl, and it was implied she'd be trainer her sister to kill her on the day she does become the Skullgirl. At the very least that counts as bittersweet instead of the pure depressing nonsense that Cerabella's brought.
Well if they don't have a lot of time to character build, why the crap did they do something as extreme as have her crush a main character down into a jewel T_T So many options to do and they went with this crap.

Yes she did, and that was a very good thing of her to do. But remember how her mother became a skull girl? She wished for an end to a war, and it was granted by making her the most vicious and powerful skull girl ever produced by the heart. Remember, this thing is very powerful, and very evil.
Well, it takes o lot of time to make a good story. And lets be honest here, the story mode is pretty obviously an excuse plot. They just wanted a reason to have these people fight each-other. And who knows. If Miss Fortune really hasn't been killed, and has been turned into the life gem, perhaps in the hypothetical sequel you were talking about earlier, Cerebella turns her back on the Medicis and finds a way to bring Nadia back.

Let's put it this way, Cerebella could have had the ending of letting Ms. Fortune go alive, and then making a wish on the Heart for her to get a new life gem to give to the boss. That would have been a pure wish and made everybody happy even if it meant her possibly turning into the Skullgirl eventually. I could have gone with that ending, but instead we got this crap.
She was attacked. Miss Fortune looked like she might have been trying to kill her (Again, I've already given my thoughts on that one, so let's just concentrate on Cerebella), and she was certainly threatening to kill the people that she considered family. She wouldn't exactly have had time to come up with a solution that pleased everyone.
Yes, exactly. Crappy writing. The only reason the story mode exists is to provide an excuse plot. None of the stories will be winning an award anytime soon. There's just so much more they could have done with it. I for one would have liked Peacock's story to be fleshed out.
Yeah, which is why they should have done a bit more care with what they actually did. To have Cerebella do something as extreme and awful as what she did requires time and creativity to make look good, and there was none of that in this story. It was utter fail and they should have definitely gone with a different ending for Cerebella <,<
I think we can all agree that the story mode wasn't anywhere near long enough. And yes, to really tell a story like Cerebella's well, you have to take much longer than they did. But to be fair, they had to write stories for eight characters. They probably didn't want any unnecessary delays, and felt that gameplay would make up for lackluster storytelling.
Also, before the scene where she killed Miss Fortune, what did you think of her? Did you think she was horrible throughout, or was it just the final scene that soured your opinion of her?

Yeah, I hope they flesh out the story much better, with a few tweaks, assuming the game does well -.-;
At first I just thought she was a gullible person that wanted to please daddy, but then the final scene showed that even if they claim she'd pure, she's far too gone to be forgivable >.> Even if they tried to make her look guilty over it. Obviously most of the hate comes from the final scene with MF, but you obviously have to include it in the whole examination of her, to show exactly how far she's willing to go, and how she's willing to turn earth into hell to please him.
It's one reason why I already have a 10 part comic planned out to continue her story a little extra to fix most of the damage this crappy story line did XD It's not canon so no harm done lol, might as well completely fix what they screwed up so badly.

I think they were trying to imply that she isn't pure any longer, if she ever really was. And really, as far as the story goes, we only have the words of other characters, who, let's face it, are not exactly saints.
Also, I'm always glad to see more of your work! It's sure to be a real treat!
Also, I'm always glad to see more of your work! It's sure to be a real treat!
Other than killing (or possibly crystalizing) Miss Fortune (which I will not deny is horrible), what did she do? From the sound of things in her intro, it sounded like she had never done anything like that before. In fact, it sounded like this was her first official job from the Medicis.
A leg breaker's actual job is to convince people to pay up, not necessarily to harm them. Often, the threat of violence is just as effective as the actual use of violence. All she'd really have to do is look intimidating, which her hat definitely allows her to do (We've seen her lift elephants with the thing!). Although I will admit, it's possible that she did hurt people, from that perspective Miss Fortune isn't really much better. She was also a criminal, remember? And she hurt people (bad people, sure, but a person is a person).
As for her being the adopted daughter of a mafia boss, it's pretty heavily implied that she has know idea what kind of people they really are. Vitale was pretty obviously keeping her in the dark about a lot of things, but would you doubt the word of the man who raised you?

You...can't be a leg breaker and still be out of the loop of what's going on I'd imagine lol.
All I know is her ending got me tempted to just quit this entire game entirely and forget it ever existed >.> To tell us how good and pure this character is, then have her flat out kill a main character or trap her in eternal hell by crushing her into a jewel? And then add on to that she brings eternal life to an evil man? Ooooh but she felt guilty for what she did, poor baby -.-; Nuts to that character I say, completely ruined the entire franchise for me.

I admit, I'm being a bit of a devils advocate here, but she could have been. Vitale could easily have lied to her, and told her that the people she was holding up were thieves. She wouldn't have any reason to doubt his word (again, people tend to just take what their parents say at face value), and according to what back-story I've been able to find, the Canopy Kingdom's government is pretty corrupt. If she believed him, it would make sense not to go to the police, especially if the people they were holding up were government officials.
And again, she was called pure a grand total of once. By a person who herself was pretty evil. As for Miss Fortune's fate she was threating the people who had acted as a family for Cerebella (I've already told you my theory as to why). If you had been raised by a man like Vitale and heard someone say those kinds of things, what would you have done? Again, I don't feel sorry for her, but it looked like her eyes were beginning to open as to just what kind of man Vitale was.
Also, franchise? There's only the one game in the setting so far...

You're ALWAYS the devils advocate in my gallery :P Pretty much any time I submit something you come in and devils advocate about something about it :P
Plus it says she was a leg breaker for the mafia, it never said she had no clue about her adopted family's mafia ties or that she was in the dark about this stuff. If that was the case it definitely would have been there since the writers went out of their way to make this character as completely likable and perfect as possible...while doing evil deeds for an evil man T_T
And Ms. Fortune was still pretty out of character here, she totally should have been saying that she'd use the wish to bring her family back to life. In fact I bet at first she begged Cerebella to let her use the wish to bring her family back but at the last second the writers changed it to this one just to make MF more of a monster and to make Cerebella look like less of a monster because of it. MF didn't even act this dark or evil to the two goons that cut her head off for goodness sakes.
And even without a game, Skullgirls can be considered a franchise :P I hope it expands further but that might change if they decide to keep Miss Fortune dead in later installments <,<

I am? Huh. Well, I would like to apologize if I'm annoying you then. I just think that you have a small tendency to blow thing out of proportion.
...
Pleasedon'tkillme.
How could they have gone out of their way? There's only seven lines in her online characte description, and again, the story bit of her story mode is eleven minutes long, a lot of which is spent with her fawning over a complete monster. I didn't get the impression that they were trying to make her as perfect as possible. In fact, she actually comes off as more than a bit gullible.
She didn't act like that to the goons, because the goons were incapable of hurting her, or at least, of doing any permanent damage. And she did say. But she changed her mind when Cerebella looked like she was going to hand over the skull hear to the Medicis. And she didn't look evil, just furious that her chance at having her family back was about to be ruined by a member of the crime syndicate that had them killed. Remember, none of the character developement that took place in her story happened in this one.
Also, if they do make another game, they probably won't keep her dead. All these story lines seem to take place in completely separate timelines. There would be absolutely no reason at all that they couldn't just have her be alive in the continuation of her story in a hypothetical sequel.

I only did that for Sonic so far, and only recently this XP You do stuff like this even on my regular arts that are just there for fun too lol.
Well, her description calls her good, MF calls her good, the Skull calls her good, and she's the only character in the entire game to not sacrifice or give up didly squat throughout her entire story mode to reach her ending. Oh the poor girl feels guilty, but others gave up their very souls and they just look to the future and what they have to do from here on in. Cerebella's ending just sucks in general >.>
Yeah I think that's one issue I have with the story mode in this, very little consistancy between the story modes, hence I guess why none of it is cannon right now. Either way, MF should have said she wanted to use the skull to save her family instead of all that crap about revenge, which was all just forced in to make her look like the pure wrong one and Cerebella the unfortunate killer.
They mentioned all the story lines converging to one point so can't tell for sure, but yeah nothing is cannon atm.

Huh? I do? When?
MF also called her naive. And really if everyone was right, what else would you expect a good person to feel after killing someone for the first time other than guilty? Also, I haven't seen all the story lines yet. Which characters give up their souls? I'm pretty sure Valentine does, but wasn't she a villain?
And I've already told you what I think about why Miss Fortune broke character. Cerebella, who didn't have any grasp at all of the entire situation, was unwittingly goading her. Even in her story, we don't get to really know much about Nadia, so we really don't have much idea what she's like. Maybe she has a bit of a temper? Don't get me wrong, I like Miss Fortune the best of all the characters (With the possible exception of Peacock), but I do feel that you're being a bit unfair to Cerebella.
Also, I think in midst of our discussion, I neglected to compliment your artwork. My apologies. It really is very nice.

Might have just been always asking questions or something, iono...maybe I'm just sleepy and cranky atm XD
Parasoul, Valentine, and Filia do. Valentine is a confusing once, since it seems like she actually wants to destroy the bad guys from the inside out as a double agent of sorts.
Unfair to the person that crushed and destroyed Miss Fortune all due to a poorly written story that made one look extra evil so the other looks extra supported? T_T They completely demonized MF just for this story to make Cerebella look better for this story, it's just wrong. Even if you think you can support why they acted the way they did, it just is ridiculously forced and in short a horrible story. It's easy to see Cerebella is one of the faves of the creators, to flat out destroy MF the way she did.
Long story short, if you go from MF story and then see this one, it's horrifying, disturbing and just a complete put off. I know this is a DLC game but they really screwed up with this ending.
Ah, thanks XD
Parasoul, Valentine, and Filia do. Valentine is a confusing once, since it seems like she actually wants to destroy the bad guys from the inside out as a double agent of sorts.
Unfair to the person that crushed and destroyed Miss Fortune all due to a poorly written story that made one look extra evil so the other looks extra supported? In order...
You should probably get some sleep then. In fact, we both should, since it's almost as late here as where you are.
I have already given you my two cents on Parasoul.
I have also already given what I feel to be a fairly reasonable explanation for Miss Fortune's change in behavior.
It wasn't for me. I didn't like what happened to Miss Fortune, but my reaction was no where near as strong as yours.
And you're welcome! I can't wait to see Ruby as Miss Fortune!

Well we can still agree it was one horrible and stupidly written story one way or another.
Although I have seen a lot of talking about her ending and a ton of people do hate her for what she did to MF lol, so it's not just me. She might end up being the most hated character because of it, even if the creators wanted her to be one of the most liked.
Yap, two characters to go XD

Thanks. That's a relief.
Heh, the funny part is that I haven't actually played the game (although I desperately want to). All I've done is seen some of the story cutscenes on youtube, read the character descriptions on the website, and gone through the TV Tropes page multiple times. I suppose I'm not really in much of a position to to be talking about this game, but I felt I had to say something.

Well, since the game has such a minor story so far that's probably all you need to do atm really to get the gist of everything lol.
Still doesn't mean any explanation at all can defend Cerebella for the simple fact of what she did at the end, or the fact that her losing her purity and feeling guilty should at all make up for the actions she did at the end of her story. There were so many ways to end her story and what happened was most definitely one of the worst ways to go about it.
