Rexar Relaxing [2012 Anniversary Edition]
Dated 21/04/2012
It was on 21 April 2007 that I first introduced Rexar to the furry world in a picture entitled 'Rexar Relaxing' (click here). Now, five years on from that day, I have created a new version of the same picture (albeit with a few additions here and there.)
The original 2007 edition of 'Rexar Relaxing' was pretty much the very first digital picture I'd ever attempted. It was drawn rather crudely with the mouse using a simple brush tool in Paint Shop Pro 6, and coloured with a very basic cell-shading approach that was not wonderfully executed. At the time however, it was just about the best piece of work I'd ever done on a PC.
It's been a long time since then, and my art style has developed considerably in that time. Over the past five years, I've learned an immeasurable amount about anatomy, shading, layers and a lot of other features of digital imaging, as well as investing in various pieces of hardware including a graphics tablet and scanner. As such, upon the fifth anniversary of Rexar's arrival into the fandom, I thought I should recreate the original picture and bring it up to date with my current style and ability.
I should stress that 'Rexar Relaxing' was not the first image of Rexar in existence - I had created the character sometime in about 2002/03 and had been drawing him on paper for a few years before first discovering the furry fandom in April 2007. After registering a forum account on scaly foot fetish forum BigClawZ as RipRoarRex, I submitted this picture a week later, and the rest is history.
As for the 2012 edition, I'm quite pleased with this considering it only took me a couple of days to produce from scratch. I wanted to add the sneakers in as an extra touch because I have always drawn Rexar with the same pair of sneakers throughout the years, so this is similarly a means of bringing them up to date. Admittedly the background is lazy, though this was a combination of wanting to keep faith with the original picture as well as giving it something of a bold, simple 'poster' look.
As ever, the anatomy is not 100% - I'm not happy with the far shoulder or with some of the proportions - but generally I feel it has come out well. It is interesting to note that in the five years I have been drawing Rexar for the fandom, most of his form has changed dramatically in line with what I have learned about anatomy, but some of his distinctive stylistic features - namely his eye ridges, his snout and his trademark expression - have remained throughout. After all, he just wouldn't be Rexar without them!
I'm back at university now after my Easter holiday finished a couple of weeks ago, so I'm unlikely to produce too many more pictures for the next month or so. But in the meantime, here's to five years of my favourite sexy scaly friend - and many more!

Heh - to be honest, probably not much different to what it is now! Unless I can pick up my speed, I find it difficult to envisage a time when I can put sufficient effort and detail into a picture within what is bound to be severely restricted free time to do a great deal better than this. But you never know - I didn't see this coming 5 years ago!
Thanks!
Thanks!
I see. I think I know what you mean, I have similar problems whenever I try to work on some new musical piece. Together with the limited time, I often lack the motivation for it, and also have quite a few things I want to work on whenever I find the time, but they all take a lot of it, so unfortunately it isn't too often that I finish one of them :(
Actually, come to think of it, my conception of Rexar has changed a lot in that time. When I first drew him he was just a mean, stompy old dinosaur that would quite happily hurt - or even kill - without caring too much about it. These days though, I don't tend to think of him like that. I conceive him more as the type of tender, caring lover that I've previously depicted in artwork with Mike, though still possessing a wild and sexy animal side.
Oooorh~ man loves yer Rexar's paws so much :3 It's great to see ya around again, how's eccentricities and life been doing since I kinda gravitated from that dimension X3 Mm, think Rexar could use a foxy for those paws? Heh. *tempts to hug a toe/sole <3*
Nice art style as always, such detailing on the character, the scales, and even the shoes and all. I remember following your artwork and all since I first came to Lavadomefive back in December 2008. <3 Then in April, met you officially, made that story guest starring Rexar in April. April 28th, I officially joined Lavadomefive too. May 1st 2009 is when I joined Faibanx for the first time. Mmm, the years go by quickly when you reminisce about them huh. Keep up the good stuff RRR <:)

I don't know really! I don't pin my characters down with ages, largely because I don't like to think of them aging - or indeed that they would be older/younger than me!
But if Rex was to have a human age, I've always said he was about 27. Older than me (for a few years at least) and with plenty of experience but still a fairly young, fit adult.

Well I was working for a while but it was only ever a short-term thing before I could get the postgraduate qualifications needed to pursue my career of choice. Now I'm nearing the end of that course so it'll be looking to make the first step on the career ladder next.
Look forward to hearing from you!

Heh - sort of! When I originally designed them back in 2007, they were partly inspired by a pair of Adidas sneakers I had at the time, but I've modified them slightly over time. Now they incorporate some aspects of design inspired by my current Nike shoes.
Age always wises up the wise, and kicks out the old! I am utterly amazed of your work from beginning till now, and the change have been always for the better! Simply a remarkable character Rexar is, and no one could take that away from him!
I also gotta say, it amazes me that his feet are way bigger than his shoes... and I wouldn't want it any other way...!
Here's to more years of amazement, crushing and smelly paws from the one and only Crimsom Rex, Rexar!

Heh! Yes, I thought someone would mention the size difference between shoes and feet! To be honest, I knew I was oversizing the feet in proportion with the shoes, but I liked the way they looked and didn't want the hassle of redrawing them!
But thanks anyway, Shiro!

oh, so sweet. Hehe. Could i draw your face: I mean something like this: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7825531/
hehe.
hehe.
Meh. Depressed, not sleeping, course stressing me out, Ipswich looking like finishing this season about 15th in the Championship while Norwich have settled comfortably into the Premier League - think you can see where I'm going...
Heh! But anyway, thanks mate! How are you? Haven't seen/heard from you in a while either.

*hugs* well thats no good!! I've been okay, just stressed and working too much. At the moment looking forward to my first vacation in over a year next month to Anthrocon, cant friggen wait.. Still, wish I was able to see another Spurs game live this year, guess I gotta wait till next season now
Heh - well it's 5 years since I discovered the furry fandom altogether, so pretty much everything was 5 years ago this year; the first public pictures of Rexar/Tydo/Rocky/Mike/Marco/Hux/Carlos, my arrival on BigClawz/LavaDomeFive/FA/Eccentricities/Macrophile, the creation of my website, etc. etc...!
Thanks!
Thanks!
Sorry for being late. I was too busy to post somethin'.
Damn, RRRex! You improved and it's clearly visible! I'm really amazed by the way you made the sneakers! They're so damn realistic! I'm impressed! I assume you placed these in that angle IRL and tried to reproduce them? 'cause it worked!
Keep up the impressive work, triple R! And don't worry about not being so much productive. I prefer that you take your time doing a masterpiece than producing quick arts that aren't as good. Nothing hurries.
Keep it up!

Thank you DL! I did indeed draw the sneakers from real life - I posed one of my own and drew from direct observation, while the one in his hand was based on a photograph of me holding my own shoe in the same position. Best way to get it right in my opinion!
Well Rexar didn't even have a name until I introduced him to the furry fandom, at which point I needed to come up with something suitable. I liked the idea of him being called 'Rex' and just played around with a few extra syllable combinations until I came up with Rexar. Nothing special really.
Well I would say it's true on some level, but may be more to do with ease of drawing. For example, I find it much easier to draw my characters facing to the left of the page than to the right. This is because I start by drawing the closest eye and then the line from the forehead to snout - a line which is easier if I am drawing away from my hand than drawing towards it.
Well I wanted Rexar to have a consistent pair of sneakers, almost as if to form part of his design. So if you look through all my artwork, he has always had these same shoes.
As far as where the design comes from, they are based on a combination of a couple of pairs of sneakers I have owned, both of which had a certain amount of blue in the design.
