Being a super hero is not an easy job, but it grows on you over time. Eddy had been fighting behind the mask of the Watchdog for years now, and it's become more and more like a job that he just had to get up and do every day. He kept track of when and where his team was operating, what projects were being worked on, when people took their days off to rest, and even kept careful logs of their achievements and failures alike. Sometimes it felt that being the Watchdog was more of his life than being Eddy, but when he stepped back and looked at everything he did, the mutt had to admit he was still living a double life.
But that brought up a very good question. Why on God's green Earth was Eddy spending his time off running around town on a tight schedule and getting into fights!? This question ran through his head again and again, but he couldn't deny that wearing proper fighting clothes and fighting against people not trying to kill you was somehow relaxing compared to what he normally was doing on a friday morning.
The mutt's dark blue Gi fit tightly around his chest, a white belt tied around his waste to prove to everyone he'd never fought in the dojo before. He had been force to sit through an hour of the sensei gab on and on about safety before he allowed the mutt to spar with his other students, but it only took thirty minutes for him to work his way up to facing his star black belt students. All three of them. At once.
"Arighty, boys, let's not get too carried away. What's the name of the game?" Eddy stretched his wrists behind his back, turning his head from side to side as he sized up the three black belts standing in the center of the large room. A crowd of other students of the school had gathered around the edge of the room to watch, each one getting a kick out of how nervous the sensei was looking at this new comer to his school.
Out of the three fighters, the tallest was a thick armed tiger with a mop of black hair tied carelessly behind his head. He stepped forward with eyes.... oh no no, eyes of the tiger. Perfect... too perfect. He stepped forward like he was in the military with his arms to his sides, speaking loudly to make sure his fellow fighters and the students of the school could hear as well. "Points for this match will be determined by falls and submissions. Falling to your side, back, or chest will result in a point to your opponent, and a submission will grant a point as well."
"Fine fine, I can do that. Hard strikes, in or out?"
The tiger growled, changing his mind at the last second. "They are allowed, but do not grant points unless it forces someone to their back, chest, or side."
"That's fair. You guys wanna start all in one area or do you wanna surround me? I'm good either way." Eddy grinned and began bouncing on the balls of his feet, excited to see what these guys were capable of. Of course, he wasn't expecting to get anything broken today, and he wouldn't attack too hard either. To him, this was all in good fun.
The tiger looked back to his two friends, a short but thick chested bear and an average sized but very fit otter both with buzz cuts. They all nodded toward each other before backing away into a circle, inviting Eddy to stand between them all. Eddy walked to the center of the dojo and shook out his hands, waiting for the sensei to ring that little gong he carries. Kinda cheezy, but it was fun anyways.
As soon as the bell rang, the three black belts charged in, but Eddy stepped away to put them all in front anyways. He forgot what school of martial arts they were supposedly teaching at this dojo, so he used anything he could think of when fighting, most he learned by trial and error out on the streets. As soon as someone grabbed his Gi to make a throw, the mutt stepped a heavy foot behind them and grabbed for the wrist for a twist and push. If they didn't let go after they hit the ground, a quick sharp jab to the triceps usually did the trick. He had earned four points before the tiger finally got a grip on the neck of his shirt, pulling him into the air for a heavy and unceremonious throw to the ground. Eddy couldn't dodge at all, so he used his head and while being flung untied his belt, letting him slip out of his Gi and land on his feet.
Anyone could have called it cheats right then, but the heat of the battle had grown into an inferno, the trio of black belts beginning to charge! They all halted when Eddy rose his hand, not in defeat, but just to pull his phone from his pocket. "Hello? Wilk, what's up buddy?"
The deer-hound yawned as he tried talking with his hero, "Aaaah, hey hey, Mr Dog. Day off, right?"
"Uh huh."
"I was wondering if you could run us some errands. Osprey is out of town, Littil is in school, Fawks is-"
"You don't have to explain everyone's schedule, bud, I'm free ri-Gck!"
"....Eddy? Eddy, you there?"
Eddy shook and gasped, his free hand grabbing at the arm that had wrapped around his neck before it too was grabbed and pulled away. He looked from one side of his to the other, gulping as best as he could under the tight grip of the tiger. Mr Bear and Otter boy were holding each of his arms, and they all looked up when the sensei walked to their front, grinning as if it was his victory.
"Poor boy, you grew cocky." The old man turned to the students watching the fight. "Rule number one, my young warriors, is to never show your back to an enemy. You never know when they will strike. It seems our guest, as strong as he seemed, fell to his own arrogance."
Eddy rolled his eyes, trying to turn his head as he felt the blood pushing far too quickly into his face from the tiger's tight hold. He messed with his phone in his hand and clicked on the speaker. His voice was raspy and forced, but he was just able to squeak out, "Wilky?"
"Yeah, speak up Eddy, can barely hear you."
"I know... give me a sec, okay?"
"Rodger."
"No no, Eddy."
"Shut up and finish whatever you're doing."
Eddy giggled as best as he could and flicked his wrist, throwing his phone to one of the students at the edge of the dojo, who caught it and looked up confused. The sensei was about to speak again to stop the mutt, but the old man had an ego to deflate, and Eddy was going to oblige. His phone-wielding hand turned and gripped tightly into the Gi of the otter, and as the other two fighter tried to pull him back, it felt as if the mutt's body had turned to iron. His face was red and strained, but he pulled at the otter until the boy was dangling just off of the ground. Eddy turned his head to look at the bear, and then he made his attack. In one fast motion, Eddy twisted his locked arm out of the bear's grasp and pulled the elbow back into the tiger's side to loosen his grasp. He kept his body turning and threw the otter into the bear, falling back with the motion but catching himself with his free hand, and in the last moment he lifted his foot to catch the tiger behind the ear. All three fell, and Eddy let his momentum carry him back to his feet.
Eddy cracked his neck from side to side and grinned over to the sensei, who stood with his mouth gaping. The mutt picked up his Gi shirt from the ground as he walked to the door, grabbing his phone before he walked outside, finished with the dojo. "Wilk, sorry about that. You got chores for me, text me a list and I'll see what I can do."
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Eddy had quite the list of chores to do, not that he really minded. The mutt usually had nothing to do on his days off, so he was always happy to have a few errands to keep him busy. And of course, any excuse to take out the new WatchCar. Eddy was proud of his new car, and especially how plain it looked when he thought of everything it could do. The plain white station wagon was armored behind its ordinary frame, held thick bullet proof glass, used military grade airless tires, held an arsenal and large first aid kit in the back... benefits of the WatchCar were too many to just list out. And it was comfortable to boot.
The mutt first made his way to the library, where he met with his favorite lil ol’ librarian turtle, Mrs Heath. The ‘sweetest’ librarian, as he called her. He was good friends with the turtle, and got private favors to use the back computers away from prying eyes whenever he needed. Mrs Heath had no idea that the mutt was using her secure computers to download and transfer funds from a special donation site Buck had set up. It seemed plenty of people, both citizens and politicians alike, wanted to show their support to the League. All it took was a quick transfer to a military base in Japan for Allen to scatter and re-collect the funds in a central account, then collect the funds again through multiple ATMS and bundle it all and set up camp in a safety deposit box in multiple banks. Easy money... ha.
After transferring the money collected that week, Eddy made a food run to the local small business supply store. The League seemed to go through food so fast that it was worth buying in heavy bulk once or twice a month. Nothing seemed to go unused, so it all worked out. Eddy chatted up some of the cashiers as he always did, watching the price rising and rising. Ramen and pop-tarts and hot pockets, bottled waters, packs of salads, bulk meats, canned juices... the price always rose over $500, and it seemed to stagger the mutt every time. How much could the League be eating!?
After a stop at the appliance store for some parts to fix the super washer and drier, the hardware store to pick up raw materials for home-made weaponry, the post office to send Allen an order for needed equipment, the electronics store to pick Buck up some newer equipment, a sporting goods store for some training equipment than needed replacing and some new hand-wraps, and the drug store for a heavy supply of first aid equipment, Eddy was finally ready to build and deliver some new equipment packs for each safe house and call it a day. It had been a busy day. Eddy thought to himself that many people probably didn’t realize the amount of work that went into being a hero in this day in age, especially running a league of heroes that all look to you for support and supplies. One thing Eddy had failed to recognize, however, was that for every extra duty that he had to do, there were more dangers he had to face. He hadn’t even realized that he had picked up a shadow at the library which had followed him through all of his chores.
The feline had been watching every transaction the unmasked hero made, and she took note of every person he spoke with. She followed as he went to every store and checked off every chore, finally even watching the mutt put together large supply packs in the back of his car and dripping them off at several locations, hidden in bushes or behind post office boxes. She huffed impatiently and dug her phone out of her pocket, pressing her quick-dial.
"Hello?"
"Sir, The Watchdog seems ready to go home. I've taken note of his contacts as Eddy, and have taken notes on each drop location."
"Good. Do not follow him home, he'll be most cautious going to his own safe house. Report in, I have a new assignment to prepare for you."
"...Sir-"
"Do not question my reasoning."
"Yes sir, I understand, and I will follow your orders."
"See you at home." Click. A small thin wolf stood from his desk, his office bathed in darkness. He opened the blinds of his window, which spanned his office wall. Before him he could see the very heart of the city from hundreds of feet up. He placed a delicate hand to the cool glass as he watched the streets below, and he couldn't help the softest of growls escaping his lips. "Watchdog... Why couldn't you just stay away?"
