Spirit gripped the wheel of the Watchcar, clenching his jaw as he watched the limo pull away. "He just... He just went. He LEFT!" The fox hit the steering wheel, pulling off his mask and pushing his fingers roughly through his hair. "Treated me like a lacky... like a little kid! I could have handled it, he just... grr!"
A small beep in the car made Fawks turn his head, barely seeing Osprey slip from the shadows of the alley to the unlocked car, sitting in the passenger seat. She always wore a mask of calm over her expression, but even the stone-faced heroine was biting her lip in frustration. "Have you contacted Buck yet?"
"No! Are we supposed to just let him go, Osprey? Seriously, I'll follow him right now if you give me the word."
"No, we can't." The archer lowered her hood, rubbing at her golden eyes as she tried to keep her own cool as the fox next to her once again hit the steering wheel. "Call Buck, see what he says."
"Fine... Guess we have nothing else to do anyways." The obviously upset heroes called into base, quickly giving Buck a quick run-down.
"Wait..." Buck was making notes, but bit the tip of his pencil. "He just went with them? Who were they?"
Fawks leaned back in his heat, trying to remain calm as he said once again, "I don't know, Buck... I've never seen them before. Some chick with a whip and a guy in a cape."
"That's not very helpful, Spirit." Buck was even beginning to be annoyed when Osprey finally answered.
"I think it was Captain Doom, Buck." Osprey had heard of the hero before she had ever met the Watchdog, but had never seen him. "Orange wolf, tuxedo themed... outfit."
"He wears a thong." Fawks huffed and puffed his cheeks a bit in disgust. "Who does that? It's almost insulting..."
Buck had gone silent for a moment, but came back, sounding half scared and half excited. "He wears it to distract his opponent, and seduce his way out of trouble... Osprey, are you sure it was Captain Doom? He... He's been out of touch since Watchdog... well, since his first, uh..."
Osprey looked over to Fawks, who looked confused. She cut off Buck, asking the newest hero, "Has he ever told you about his first battles?"
Fawks raised his eyebrows. "Uh, no, not really. Why?"
Osprey sighed. "Buck, we're coming home. Try to get in contact with Eddy." She hung up the onboard phone and leaned back in her seat. "Fawks drive us home. I'm going to tell you what Eddy should have in the beginning. Before he ever dawned a mask, Eddy had a friend. His best friend in the world, who he trusted more than anyone. His name was Carrot..."
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Eddy had spoken to Carrot for almost two hours. He exited the wolf's new office wearing only his jeans and a plain white undershirt. His uniform and utility belt were stored in a collapsable duffle-bag the mutt had carried with him for such a need to change, and he carried the bag towards the elevator as Carrot's words repeated again and again through his head.
Carrot stood in the doorway of his office, wearing a simple tan suit with a fur-matching tie, watching the hero leave. The villain known as Oracle had even shed her mask for a more comfortable black and yellow shirt with black slacks. She grinned, chuckling as Eddy dragged his feet down the hall. She spoke in a whisper to her boss, "He'd be so easy to take out right now, Carrot. He's unarmed and unsuspecting... It'd almost be too easy to get him off of the streets forever."
Carrot shot his partner a quick glare before turning his eyes back towards his old friend. "You really would love that, wouldn't you? As much as I will say again that it's not the battle of fists that will break down the Watchdog, I will also remind you-"
"You don't need to remind me of anything, Captain. I remember how strong he is and all that. Sheesh, you never let me have fun."
Eddy finally stepped into the elevator and turned to give one final look towards the man who used to be his best friend. He forced a grin on his face and gave a small wave as the elevator doors closed. He lost his smile as soon as he was alone, and he sighed, dropping his bag. "An investigative reporter working alongside the national news and the police force? How did Captain Doom get into THAT position." The mutt ran his fingers through his hair, pulling almost painfully hard as he thought. As soon as he was back on the street and out of the tall business building where Carrot spent his days, Eddy pulled out his cell and turned it back on, noticing many missed messages from Buck. He quick-dialed the boy, knowing he owed them a full explanation.
"This is Buck."
"Buck, hey."
"Eddy!"
"No time to talk right now, bud. I'm on my way, I'll be about an hour. Get everyone available for an audio meeting. It'll be short."
"Well, where are you? We'll pick you up, we can-"
"Watchdog, out."
"Wait, Edd-"
Eddy hung up the phone. He needed this hour walk to think.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Fawks paced the floor of the Watchdog headquarters, which was based out of a large home near Buck's house. The hero paced impatiently, his mask laying on a small side-table alongside his gloves, his boots laying close-by. He ran his fingers roughly through his hair again, almost annoying Osprey who sat near-by.
"He should have told me."
Osprey didn't even look over to Fawks as she answered, "So you've said."
"Why would he keep something like that a secret!? I mean, that his arch nemesis lives right here in the city and knows more about him than we do? That's not something you just keep to yourself until it comes and bites your tail!" Fawks felt his knuckles crack under the strain of his clenched fist, and he shook out his hands to try and relax them a bit. "Where IS he?"
Buck half-closed his laptop to look over to where Fawks was pacing. "Should be here any second, actually. His beacon is back on. He should be walking up the street right now."
"Can't wait to here his excuse. Going off to fraternize with the enemy, cutting off communication... how do we know he wasn't giving away secrets?"
To this Osprey rose an eyebrow. "Do you honestly think Eddy would turn on us? Seriously?"
Fawks stopped and bit his lip. "W-well... no, of course not, he'd never... but he's not the brightest guy! I mean, I'm not a freakin book worm know-it-all like Buck. No offense."
Buck grinned wide. "None taken."
"If we could at least monitor him, we could have known something... anything. Just, what if-"
The door of the living room clicked as Eddy unlocked it, walking in very casually. He tossed his duffle-bag to the ground by the door and made a bee-line right for Buck and the computer. "Buck, set up the audio meeting, I've got-"
Fawks stepped in front of his boss, blocking his path with crossed arms. "You... You should have told me."
Eddy raised an eyebrow, both at the statement and the nerve Fawks was showing giving him that tone. "I'm sorry?"
"Captain Doom? Your little past history with a big-time villain? His interest in your professional AND personal life? You should have told me! And I am not your little kid side-kick, you can't just brush me away when you want to have a chat with a couple of masked villains with all of your equipment turned off." Fawks wanted to go on, but he was becoming more and more frustrated the more he looked into Eddy's eyes, which looked slightly offended and not sorry in the least.
Eddy turned his head for a moment to look at Osprey. "We all have our secrets, Fawks." He turned back to the newest member of the League. "I have learned from my past, but I don't take pride in my mistakes. I thought my past would remain my own, and that I wouldn't be forced to relive it again. If you want an apology, you're barking up the wrong tree, but you can do research. My past isn't so hard that you can't find it out on your own."
Fawks bit his lip, feeling a twinge of guilt, but his frustrations were still strong. "Look, your life is your own thing, but you treated me like I was just a kid getting in your way. We're a team, Eddy. Yeah you're the leader, but you're not... You're not BETTER than us, okay? If your past is going to bite us in the ass, i'd rather know-"
"Fawks." Eddy spoke very sternly again, once again in an almost angered voice that his team never heard. "I never asked about your past. Please stay out of mine." The mutt walked past Fawks, finishing his talk as he walked up to a nervous looking Buck and taking the head-set. "Buck, start audio-meeting. Is everyone present?" Buck nodded, and Eddy out on the head-set. "Attention. This is Watchdog, and I have a very important message for you all. An old nemesis of mine, Captain Doom, has re-surfaced, and is fighting us through the hearts of the people." Fawks looked questionably at Eddy, and then to Osprey, who also looked a bit confused. Eddy continued, "My image, as you know, has been seen in multiple news papers all over the city. While I thought that this would work as a deterrent of crime, Captain Doom has seen it's potential as a weapon against us. As of tomorrow, Captain Doom will be providing evidence to the courts that The Watchdog is a threat and a danger to the general public, and a warrant for his immediate arrest will be issued." Eddy closed his eyes, taking in a deep breath before going on. "Only I am being targeted by the police. None of you have been photographed as far as we know. From now on, take any precautions necessary to keep yourself out of the public view. Our presence will make us the enemy of the police. I'm sorry, everyone. Stay safe tonight."
Eddy nodded to Buck, who turned off the meeting. The mutt took off the head-set and looked over to Osprey. Osprey didn't say anything, but glared knowingly at Eddy before grabbing her bow from the floor and walking to the door, saying to Fawks quickly, "I'll be on patrol."
Fawks didn't know what to do right then. He needed to get home to his roommate, or else they'd be suspicious. He looked at Eddy again, and then turned away, feeling betrayed and worried. He felt like his friend was changing fast, but there was nothing they could do right then. The fox walked to the stairs, going down to the training rooms to shower and change before going home.
Eddy patted Buck on the shoulder, looking down at the deer-hound. "I'm sorry about all this, Buck."
The nerd hero looked awkwardly up at Eddy, scratching the base of one of his antlers. "Heh... well, I mean, I knew about Doom and all. It's not really that big of a thing... but you should talk to the others soon. They kinda... well, you get kinda scary when Carrot's on your mind."
"Yeah, I know." Eddy rubbed his eyes. "I'm sorry." The mutt walked for the front door. He could hear Fawks showering downstairs, and he could only imagine what everyone thinks of him. "Buck?"
"Yes sir?" Buck's tail swished behind him slowly.
"Should I have just told everyone about Carrot? I mean, did I make a bad choice, keeping that from them?"
Buck thought on that for a moment. "I don't know, sir. Your past is very sensitive to you, but it might help you to share it. On the other hand, you were trying to paint a picture of perfection to gain the trust and devotion of your fellow heroes. I think you felt like if those under your leadership saw the emotional flaws and your past gullibility and blindness towards your misplaced trust, they would not follow you with the devotion, pride, and understanding that they did. Of course you knew that if they found out, you risked loosing their trust in you as well as the respect you feared was threatened by the very secrets you kept."
Eddy raised an eyebrow and scratched his head. "Huh... wow, Buck, you read me like a book."
Buck grinned wide. "Read? Sir, have you ever read my fan-fics?"
