This is an experiment for starting plants for my garden.
I live in a desert area and as I'm sure you can understand water is not too plentiful. The ground is Caliche. wet turns into sucking mud and dry it's like concrete. The sun and wind will dry things out quickly. I use a drip system to water my plants.
Since I don't have a green house to start seeds early I usually buy already started ones. My wife has been getting salad greens in these containers for a bit and tossing them when done. I got the idea to fill them with moist potting soil and setting them in a partly shaded area after adding the seeds. If things go as I hope the moisture should be mostly trapped inside to conserve water and also stay warmer. I will plant these in the prepared ground later if they work. Be nice to get some fresh herbs for the kitchen and other vegetables. Also I will know what is growing since it's the only thing in there. I'll let you know if it worked.

yelleena I know for a fact that this idea works very well as it is a common practice here in Australia, particularly in the summer but surprisingly you do have to keep an eye out for things getting mouldy. We also use 2lt plastic drink boltles with the neck cut off as toppers over seedlings when planting out from this stage, being taller they allow the plant to grow up and its like a mini green house. If you find they are getting too moist just add a couple of small vents like opening a window of a greenhouse.
You might also like to send your idea over to
creature.comforts who include gardening and would love to here your idea.
