Take culture of fierce nomad warriors. Add pinch of gunpowder, a dozen brass buttons, and oil. Mix carefully and leave to rise overnight. Take cover.
15 years ago, the Rosomai made a successful bid to enter the Beastfolk Alliance, despite the many who wished that their people would simply be wiped out or driven away. Few thought that these warlike, backwards, and poor barbarians would be of much use.
That was before the Checchiatari 'discovered' oil beneath the Rosomai's feet, a newly harnessed form of energy that could bring light and power to all Beastfolk.
Now the Rosomai move forward at a breakneck speed, with new wonders and wealth flowing into their lands. Yet many still fear the loss of their race, their culture, and their identity. Many others also fear for their lives- Clan Ulic's power grows by the day and those with oil are gradually overpowering those without.
While the nomadic culture of the clans and their armored warriors may be at stake, the aggressive and ambitious nature of the Rosomai remains healthy and completely intact. Whether greed will destroy or galvanize them is still open to debate.

I'm fairly pleased with how it came out. I briefly entertained what a 'fantasy' style oil well would look like, but ultimately the concept seemed a bit silly to me. Mines and wells are not artful structures, even in fantasy realms, so I stuck with functionality and a bit of familiarity.
Another thing people don't realize is that the derrick isn't used for pumping, just drilling.
A lot of the cable tool rigs also looked like the one on here:

They didn't necessarily use a traditional derrick. Rotary bits we currently use have really only been in common use for a few decades, and weren't invented until sometime in the 30s IIRC.

Heh, honestly I was just kinda going for 'suspicious', but I suppose he could potentially be unhappy. Things like oil tend to make a few people very rich while making many other peoples' lives more difficult.
In "Prince Kazimir", some allusion is made to the fact that Clan Ulic has been extracting and using oil as a cottage industry for quite some time. Ulic is also the clan that endorses Kazimir and sends its Hetman, or leader, to join the Alliance. Ulic is also a smaller clan that commands little respect and has a reputation for defying traditions.
Since then, I've imagined that Ulic's position has now transformed. By clearing the Holischiky from the northern coast, Ulic not only has oil but a port to ship it from, a connection to the rest of the world. They're the most modern of the clans to date, and the soldier above wears the the Ulic seal on his chest. And yes, they have guns now.

Heh, suspicious works too.
You know, took me a moment to remember that bit about them having oil lamps out the wazoo but now that you mention it... And yeah it would make sense that their position would change, the discovery of oil kickstarted so much in our own industrial revolution.

The cultural similarities between the Beastfolk Alliance and the Russian Empire are... well, I suppose they're not a coincidence
The Rosomai and the Sabalazmon's closest real historical analogs would be the Tatars and the Kazakhs, respectively, but their cultural influences are a mashup of all kinds of equestrian cultures. Weirdly, both the Rosomai and Sabalazmon are anatomically ill-suited to life on the steppe, but that's why they domesticated and mastered horses. The concept of fighting in disciplined lines is still something they're struggling with, but they're no strangers to formation and drill thanks to centuries of warfare.
