This is Patchface. He's the alpha of the small pack the lab has created. In the tradition they developed, the pack gave him the name when they felt he had earned it. He's got a rather sad backstory. There was one guy at the lab who felt like just creating life wasn't enough. Oh no, that was boring. So he decided to tamper with the DNA, mixing in that of different animals like foxes and tigers so that the resulting animal would look "cooler."

As an aside, I love animals. Heck, everyone on this site loves animals. But in the real world, there is always some dickhead who sees them as nothing more than tools. Every case of animal abuse proves this point well. This guy selfishly created a being just to suit his own tastes without any thought on what quality of life the creature would have. Don't worry, he gets his comeuppance eventually in the story.

As a result of tampering with his gentic code so much, his DNA became very unstable. The lab doesn't think Patchface will live very long. At 5 years old, his body is already showing signs of deteriorating and breaking down. Since he's got nothing to lose, it gives him a lot of courage and a reckless streak. He became the alpha simply by not backing down and taking on every challenge that came his way. He knows in his own way his time is running out, so he's determined to break his pack out of the lab before he dies.
