How do you make a chain of micromaille? By hand, or by machine?

Machine made rings, and hand woven.

So the rings are made in a machine. So in my head, I see many tiny little disconnected rings. You then weave these tiny metal rings together with your hands. I assume they have tiny holes you use to loop them. That sounds like thumb-murder.
