He is also known as 'Vanity' to those who want to simplify things.
The spoiled son of a rich Cloudsdale family, who won the favor of Celestia several generations back. They now claim to be distant cousins of the royal family, though in fact they are just appointed nobles, with titles that mean next to nothing anymore. But Vainglory is a adored by his mother, and as she is the matriarch of the family, gets everything he wants. He loves nothing more than the written word, and actually has quite delicate writing for a non-unicorn. He does calligraphy, and it is quite sought after in the upper echelons of Cloudsdale, and even by some ponies in Canterlot.

He is indeed incredibly vain but now that he's been visiting places other than Canterlot and Cloudsdale, he's becoming much less so.
