Lookit the fluffy kitty, d'aawwwwww!
When you look at the king of the jungle sleeping like that, you could totally forget it's a wild animal able to tear you to pieces with ease if it felt like it.
It amazes me every time to see how much "cat" is in the big, wild versions of the minature tigers we love to keep at home.

Well, to be fair, too, lions are far easier to socialize then just about any other big cat. Most big cats are loners and don't readily bond with anything but themselves (*cough* tigers *cough*). Lions, on the other hand, are wired to want company.
From all I've read, the biggest problem with lions is the Lenny Syndrome; they're strong enough to knock your head off with a play-cuff and some of them don't know their own strength. Even that can be trained into them, though.
When Disney was making The Lion King, they actually had a (BIG) litterbox-trained lion in the studio with them as a model. After some initial consternation, everyone came to trust the big kitty, some of the animators decided pet-the-lion was a good stress reliever, and the cat, of course, loved all the attention he got.
All that, however, doesn't mean you want one as a pet.
