So I did a little doodle in anticipation for receiving my new pet. I ordered a Venus Flytrap online yesterday since I always wanted one and no stores in my area sell 'em.
Little Gozer isn't in my hands, yet but I'm excited to get him! Yep, I'm naming him Gozer. I was going to name him Audrey, but that would have been way to obvious of a name. >_<
I'm really hoping I do well with my new pet since I don't have good luck with plants. I've killed my herb garden AND my cactus, but I'm going to try REALLY hard not to kill this one.
I've been doing a lot of research online to learn how to care for them, and I'm honestly a little nervous.
If you give them tap water or mineral water, they die.
If you overwater them they die.
If you don't let them hibernate a few month during the year, they die.
If they decide that they want to grow a flower, they might die.
If anyone here has had good luck with carnivorous plants, throw a few tips my way. :)
There will be pictures of Gozer when I get him.

I had one for a year. didn't get very big but it lived for a year. Strange. Mine was watered with tap water. but mine is off of a well, I don't live in a city. Just before it died, a month or so before it started eating gnats. Best thing that worked for me was watering at night to prevent sunburns to the leaves and such, watering very little and keeping it in a small clear container, so it would steam and condensate, rewatering itself. Kinda like a simulation rain forest thing? I tried helping it with bugs, they are very picky about what they eat. They snap more at fingers than actual insects. So I tried like, crippling flies and leaving them near the plant to give it a better chance.
That is all I have for you. My issue was, when it started getting bigger I didn't have peat moss and a bigger container for it. It advises you to cut flowering buds off if you see them. Which should be fine. :P

Distilled water is the way to go! Most of them come in pots with holes in the bottom, so set it in a little dish of distilled water and just refill it as it dries. They like it moist, but not drenched. Mist them every once in a while and make sure to keep them in a sunny window (most come with a cup over the top so moisture can stay in there). They love humidity. Catch as many mosquitoes/flies as possible and keep them in the cup or put them in the mouths yourself! Also, the mouths only close three times. Once it's closed the third time? The head dies and falls off. It takes a lot of energy to do that, and if you poke them with your finger or something else, and they get no nutrients..bye bye plant. Resist the urge! (I used to be the 'expert' people went to for the carnivorous plants at the garden store I worked at.)
LOL, awesome that you worked at a garden store. :)
I've already been looking up distilled water and my local grocery store and they have it for $1 a gallon, which is nice. I hear some people saying just to put water in the plate the pot is sitting in but that doesn't sound right to me. :/
I know I'll be able to resist the urge of poking it (Well, maybe I'll do it just once), but it may be a different story if my little cousins or nephews come over. I'll have to hide the plant when they do. LOL.
Also, I know I have to resist the urge of feeding it a firefly. As amusing as that might be, I heard stories of the trap dying shortly after. >_>

I had a couple Whitetop Pitcher Plant's (sarracenia leucophylla) grown from seedlings in a specially prepared container 2010, now almost the entire container is full of 3' tall Whitetops. No complaints here, I get a bug free zone and they get food; plus they're awesome to look at too. In spring I get a few new borns that are all green to begin with but, once they're young adults by three years they start showing white flakes around their necks and heads as well as red and green veins on top with the leaf. The great thing about them is that they are cold hardy plants and thrive in full sun.
They're a delight to have around once you know what they need. I've had a Venus Fly Trap before, those little buggers are easy to grow but need a lot of attention. From the sound of things your a bit nervous I bet. I'll be honest with you, they're not the easiest carnivorous plants to maintain. They're very picky/tricky plants, they don't tolerate very cold weather well, they're sensitive to a lot of things we'd over look as being silly and they don't grow very large which is why they're so difficult to maintain. A quick tip, if you plan on growing a Flytrap, grow it outside... your have an easier time with them but, they're still difficult to maintain. XD I'm sure you've made up your mind about getting it but, in my personal opinion... your better off with larger carnivorous plant.
