They do take on new attributes once your an adult. Both the Movies and the Show are filed with 4th wall breaking and references kids wouldn't get.
The Halloween Special with Vincent Price is great example of this. The whole episode was filled with classic horror references that I didn't get as a child and a great joke about cannibalism.
