this full-grown house spider fell out from our wall clock today, and mother told me to get her outside. so I took a glass to catch and carry her outside, and as a spontaneous idea I got the camera to show you what kind of spiders we germans grow. :) this here specimen has a 8mm long body and covers my hand (glove size 10) when she would sit down.
they are neither very aggressive nor strong enough to bite a human, but still I have respect before them.

in my experience, with most spiders the best way to determine is overall size. of course, hunting spiders are normally about the same size.
middle europe has hunting spiders named "Wolf Spider". they don't hunt in packs, so I don't know where that name comes from... the males are a bit smaller and almost black, while the females are a reddish brown. they are fast as hell. :) if I'm taken right they are related to the much bigger tarantulas.
